Boston College BC didn't exactly hold its own at the line of scrimmage throughout, but it was decent enough to keep this game interesting in a 16-14 loss at Notre Dame. A depleted backfield and fighting a losing season could have derailed Frank Spaziani's bunch, but didn't. Grade: C. Clemson Dabo Swinney's seventh-ranked team didn't bother getting off the bus in Raleigh and will pay a dear price. With so many other teams above it losing, as this space noted could happen, the Tigers would be back in the national title hunt had they not been blown out, 37-13, at NC State. What an enormous lesson for Clemson and every other program in the nation. Grade: F-. Duke David Cutcliffe's club sure does have a lot of fight, but it just can't win these close games in the ACC, as was again the case in a 38-31 loss to Georgia Tech at home Saturday. Sean Renfree passed for 250 yards and four touchdowns in an impressive comeback, but it just wasn't enough. Grade: C. Florida State Jimbo Fisher would probably love to have the last minute of Saturday night's game against Virginia back. FSU poorly handled the clock and paid for it, missing a 43-yard field goal inside the last few seconds to lose to Virginia, 14-13 in Tallahassee. The Seminoles just haven't made the strides so many of us expected. Grade: D. Georgia Tech Tevin Washington hit the air for 185 yards in a 38-31 win at Duke. The Yellow Jackets also got 136 rushing yards from Washington, but they couldn't put away the Blue Devils. A win is a win, and Tech should creep back into the national rankings. Grade: C. Maryland Saturday was just one more game in a most disappointing season that has this program in a jumbled mess right now. The 31-10 loss at Wake Forest was just more of the same for the Terrapins. The bigger picture is how Randy Edsall gets his team back. Grade: F. Miami The Hurricanes were really strong defensively in limiting South Florida to 249 total yards in a 6-3 win in Tampa. But the offense was horrid, and just hadn't been nearly as explosive as many expected. But this is still a road win at a club from a BCS conference and also assures Miami of being bowl eligible. Grade: C. North Carolina A couple of missed field goals and a fumble deep in Hokies' territory kept the Tar Heels from pulling off another upset in Blacksburg. But it wasn't meant to be, as Carolina lost 24-21. UNC's lackluster effort for stretches in the middle of this game was puzzling, to say the least. Grade: C. NC State It looks like Tom O'Brien can get his team up for more than just North Carolina. Great game plan, great execution, great intensity and great focus by the Wolfpack in crushing Clemson, 37-13. And quite frankly, the game was more lopsided than the score. State is one win away from bowl eligibility and saving TOB's job. Grade: A. Virginia In the final minute alone, UVa overcame a major injury to a key player, a questionable call that went FSU's way, a facemask penalty after it appeared FSU's final possessions was stopped, another penalty getting FSU's kicker five yards closer, and the fact that it had never won in Tallahassee to beat FSU 14-13 to remain alive for the ACC's Coastal Division title. Perhaps the most bizarre conclusion to an ACC game that matters ever, Mike London's program took a giant step forward. Grade: A. Virginia Tech Not a great performance in a 24-21 win over UNC last Thursday. But Frank Beamer's team has really only put forth a couple of really impressive efforts. This team is Virginia Tech Light, but it's still 10-1 and can win its division next weekend. Grade: B. Wake Forest Tanner Price passed for 320 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in leading the Demon Deacons to a 31-10 rout of visiting Maryland. Wake is now bowl eligible, and has a good chance at playing its bowl game in Charlotte with a win this coming week versus Vanderbilt. Grade: A. ACC Clemson's loss to NC State really hurts the league, especially with the other top-10 losses that took place that Clemson could have taken advantage of. Virginia Tech beating UNC will move up the Hokies. Virginia's win at FSU was exciting, but it kept alive the Cavaliers' hope of reaching the ACC title game, which will hurt the marquee value of the contest. At least Wake and Miami became bowl eligible. Grade: D.
