Over the past couple of years, as conference realignment has reshaped some conferences and destroyed others, conference revenue has been the preferred measuring stick of those judging winners and losers. More often than not, ACC Commissioner John Swofford has been a favorite whipping boy, as many sought to make light of his conference’s seemingly microscopic revenue payout. Now, though, David Teel has done the legwork to get his hands on the league’s tax returns, and the results are a bit surprising. As Teel points out in his excellent piece at the Daily Press, Swofford’s policy has been to not release past or future revenue numbers. Reporters such as Teel have to request the tax returns, and then make sense of them. The result of Teel’s work shows a sizable growth in league revenue from 2008 to 2012, and that the ACC is doing better compared to other conferences than you might have imagined. Per Teel: ACC television revenue nearly tripled from 2008-12, while the conference’s bowl income increased 50 percent and league basketball tournament receipts declined.
