This past week, Tennessee’s coaching staff and players made sure to refer to the Crimson Tide as “the red team” during practice and interviews – the theory was that the name “Alabama” struck fear into the hearts of their opponents, and the Vols wanted to make sure that everyone realized that it was just another game on the schedule. Well, apparently Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron and his teammates weren’t thrilled to hear the news. Check out what he told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson after today’s 45-10 beatdown. AJ McCarron to @tracywolfson : “We kind of felt disrespected because they called us the red team all week long.” #SEC #Vols #CBS — Vince Ferrara (@VinceSports) October 26, 2013 McCarron: “I felt disrespected. For us, to kind of say ‘we didn’t deserve their respect’ to call us ‘Alabama’ and then call us ‘red team,’ — Dargan Southard (@dsouth16) October 27, 2013 McCarron on being called the red team: “I felt disrespected. I wanted to come out and score as many points as possible.” — David Paschall (@DavidSPaschall) October 26, 2013 To be fair, you can’t really blame Tennessee for refusing to be intimidated in a big rivalry game. But as the Vols soon found out, there’s a reason opponents fear the Tide – they’re really, really good.
