A turf toe injury has sidelined Alabama cornerback Deion Belue. The senior CB was a productive asset to the Tide’s nail-biting win over the Aggies on Saturday, but this week he will be lucky if he plays. As of Wednesday, Belue has yet to practice. Nick Saban says he is “making progress” but is still considered day to day and “questionable” for the start against Colorado State University in Alabama’s home opener. There is no “good” time for injury, but if there was, it would be now for the Tide. While Colorado State is the new home of Jim McElwain, the former Alabama offensive coordinator- they have yet to fully impress in Fort Collins, Colorado. Last year, McElwain’s first year as head coach of the Rams, CSU beat in state rival University of Colorado Buffaloes in their “equivalent” to the Iron Bowl but instead played as the first game of the season. Since that win, it’s been relatively uneventful. CSU comes to Bryant-Denny stadium 1-2 on the season. Keep in mind, worse teams have done greater damage to unsuspecting programs that don’t respect their opponent, especially opponents who know “the secrets”…. and so one major question that remains is who can replace Belue while he recovers? “Whether it be John Fulton, Bradley Sylve, Cyrus Jones and two freshman, we’re letting all of those guys compete,” said Saban on Wednesday. From there it’s simple- Saban believes by the end of the week who ever plays the best will win the spot for the game. For those of you wondering, a Google search has revealed to me the details of turf toe as basically an over-extension of the big toe and as we all know as football fans- it is quite common in the sport. As for exactly how long Belue could be out for? I’ll leave that to the real sports medicine doctors, but at the moment we fans are on the wait and see schedule.
