Alabama Offseason Update

By SBRForum.com

No doubt the Crimson Tide are going to be popular in 2012's college football odds among the masses. They may have lost some key pieces from last season, but this team is always stacked on offense and especially on defense, meaning the rest of the SEC is likely in store for another world of hurt.

OK, so Trent Richardson has moved on to the NFL. Receivers Marquis Maze and Darius Hanks have graduated, and the defense has lost some talent too.

That’s not stopping the majority of the public from backing Alabama to reach the national title game once again.

Eddie Lacy was Richardson’s backup last season and will assume a much bigger role in the offense now. There’s also Jalston Fowler and Dee Hart who will see some touches out of the backfield as well.

As for receiving targets, DeAndrew White and Kenny Bell will be two of the main options, as will tight end Michael Williams.

They’ll all be catching passes from quarterback A.J. McCarron, who should feel pretty damn confident after leading his team to the BCS Championship this past season. His confidence should have only grown and it’s likely Nick Saban will allow him to pass it a lot more often this season, especially with Richardson now in a Cleveland Browns jersey.

The offensive line remains relatively unchanged, which is another big factor that should only aide in McCarron’s progress.

While we’ve spent most of our time talking about Alabama’s offense, it’s their defense which won them the title last season and this unit should be pretty special once again this year. Saban always seems to bring in extremely athletic and versatile youngsters and transform them into defensive animals. This season shouldn’t be any different, even in the face of some losses across like Dre Kirkpatrick.
