Aledo's Gray sets HS national TD record

Aledo running back Jonathan Gray set the national touchdown record Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas as Aledo captured the 4A Division II state championship in a 49-28 win over Manvel. Gray ran for 241 yards and a touchdown, the 205th of his career, breaking the previous record held by Mike Hart of Nedrow Onondaga, N.Y, who went on to star at running back for Michigan Wolverines. Gray, a senior, committed to Texas before the start of the season, choosing the Longhorns over TCU and Texas A&M. This was the second straight year that Gray has set national headlines in a state championship game. Last year, Gray rushed for for 320 yards and 8 touchdowns as Aledo captured the state championship 69-34 over La Marque. The 8 touchdowns pushed him to 58 rushing touchdowns on the season, setting the Texas single-season record. On Saturday, Gray fell just 14 points shy of the national scoring record and 343 yards short of the national career rushing record. Many consider Gray the top running back in Texas high school football history. An announced attendance of 43,369 were on hand to watch Gray's final high school game. Aledo is a suburb of Fort Worth and is only about 20 miles west of Cowboys Stadium. The next time those in Dallas-Fort Worth will get to see Gray suit up again will be next October at the Cotton Bowl when the Longhorns take on the Oklahoma Sooners.
