Arizona State defensive end Junior Onyeali will not play in the Las Vegas Bowl after being suspended following a verbal altercation with coach Dennis Erickson. Onyeali, last year's Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year, was suspended Monday and will not participate in Thursday's game against Boise State, which is Erickson's last game as Arizona State's head coach. Onyeali missed four midseason games with a knee injury and wasn't much of a factor this year after his breakout freshman season, finishing with just 11 tackles and one sack. Sophomore Davon Coleman, who had 41 tackles and 2.5 sacks this season while earning significant playing time, will start in Coleman's place. A source within the program said Monday that receiverkick returner Jamal Miles also might miss the bowl game because of an unspecified violation of team rules. Miles did not practice with the team Sunday, but his status for the game has not yet been determined. Miles had more than 1,700 total yards this season and would be a significant loss, especially in the return game. The junior had 1,020 return yards and three touchdowns (two kickoff, one punt) this season to go along with 361 receiving yards, six receiving touchdowns and 237 rushing yards.
