"We're not going to mess around. We're going out there to win the game." With those words the tone of the 2013 Rose Bowl preparations were set by Barry Alvarez, who will step out from behind his AD desk and coach in his fourth and final granddaddy of them all on January 1st, 2013. Setting the tone is one thing, but getting players to buy in so quickly, that's a different story.  However, it's becoming clear that for the likes of Montee Ball, Travis Frederick and Curt Phillips they are all in and willing to fight for their head coach. At least they are putting on the bravest of faces as they begin the crazy period surrounding the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA and are truly focused on winning a football game.  "With everything that happened and when Coach (Alvarez) took over, and he said those things and said that we're not going to mess around," junior captain Travis Frederick said. "It really sent a message to the team that this i...

Badgers 2012 Year in Review: No. 6 - Montee Ball Attacked

Welcome back to the countdown of the biggest stories in the year that was 2012 for the Wisconsin Badgers. When we last were here it was for our No. 7 story, the one about a QB with a bionic like knee becoming the starter down the stretch and leading the Badgers to a Big Ten title.  Today, it's a story that was about as bizarre as they come and one that rocked Badger Nation...

Wisconsin continues Beef Bowl dominance

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. They came. They ate. They conquered. Again. For the second consecutive year, Wisconsin's football team devoured its opponent not literally, thankfully on Friday night at the Lawry's Beef Bowl, an annual tradition between the two teams competing in the Rose Bowl. Much like years past, the carnivore carnage was colossal. According to official scorers...

Stanford Defense Preview: Breaking Ball

Montee Ball and Wisconsin's running game ran wild in the Big Ten conference title game. The Badgers will need that kind of protection and production from Ball and Co. again if it wants to get the best of a very good Stanford defense in the 99th Rose Bowl.

Badgers, Cardinal open Rose Bowl week

Wisconsin is in the Rose Bowl for the third straight year. This time, the Badgers are bringing a familiar face with them on the sideline. Athletic director Barry Alvarez, who won three Rose Bowls during his coaching career in Madison, Wis., is handling coaching duties for the 99th Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 following the departure of Bret Bielema for Arkansas. Alvarez joined his team...

Was Canada held down by Bielema at Wisconsin?

When Matt Canada was hired as the offensive coordinator in 2012 from Northern Illinois some fans shook their heads wondering what Bielema was doing hiring a coach that ran a spread offense. Further still, some wondered if Bielema was going to put Matt Canada under some sort of strict orders to pound the rock. Well, according to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel it&...

Badgers defense confident, looking to erase past Rose Bowl memories

For the seniors on this years team they're part of history they'd rather forget, losers of two straight Rose Bowls and all. Those memories aren't lost on the likes of Devin Smith or Mike Taylor who will be part of a group of Wisconsin seniors on the defensive side of the football and along with a renewed focus on the game itself it has the Badgers defense confident about...

Badgers 2012 Year in Review: No. 4 - Ball Breaks Career TD Record

It seems like there's been a lot of negative stuff hovering around our countdown lately and unfortunately that was a major part of the story of Wisconsin athletics in 2012. Not everything came up roses, especially for Montee Ball, who came up at No. 6 for being a victim of a 5-on-1 beatdown just before fall camp opnend up and then we followed that up with a look at the dramatic...

Batting Down the Hatches

Having helped Wisconsin’s defense hold eight opponents to 14 points or less in regulation this season, Beau Allen and the Badgers’ defensive front have been preparing to get into the face of Stanford’s quarterback.

Beef Bowl goes to Bucky.... Again.

(Center Travis Frederick gives ceremonial first pour at the Lawry's Beef Bowl) Wisconsin made it 6-1 in their trips to the Rose Bowl.... Wait, that's not right... Ah, but it is. See, they made it 6-1 in the annual Lawry's Beef Bowl, an unofficial eating contest that takes place the week of the Rose Bowl each year since 1956. Bucky bested Stanford in a close battle...

Badgers 2012 Year in Review: No. 5 - UW downed in dramatic Rose Bowl

When last we left you on our countdown of the good, the bad, and the ugly that was the year of 2012 in Badger sports, we were talking about arguably the ugliest story of the year - Montee Ball being attacked by 5 people back in late July - which came in at No. 6 in our countdown.  Unfortunately today we're continuing the misery of remembering bad things that happened in...
