NEW YORK (AP) -- Notre Dame is a victory away from playing for the BCS title. Alabama and Georgia each need two, and could have to go through each other. A day after Oregon and Kansas State lost to give up control of the BCS race, the Fighting Irish (.9973) moved into first place in the standings for the first time. "Now we don't have to answer questions about style points or politics," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "Now we have a chance to play for the national championship this week." Notre Dame (11-0), ranked No. 1 in both polls and by the computer ratings, needs only to beat slumping rival Southern California on Saturday in Los Angeles to earn its first trip to the BCS title game. Alabama (.9333) and Georgia (.8763) also have rivalry games Saturday. The Crimson Tide hosts Auburn and the Bulldogs play Georgia Tech at home. If the favorites win, the Southeastern Conference championship game will be a national semifinal of sorts, with the winner advancing to the BCS title game. If form does not hold, and there are more upsets such as the ones that took out Oregon and Kansas State on Saturday night, there are a handful of teams that could be in the mix. Florida (10-1) is in fourth heading into a huge game at 10th-place Florida State. The Seminoles (10-1) also will have an ACC title game to play. Oregon (10-1) dropped to fifth and Kansas State (10-1) was sixth. Notre Dame, which last won a national championship in 1988, has lost nine of the last 10 against USC, the lone victory coming in 2010, Kelly's first season as coach. But the Trojans have been a major disappointment this season, starting it No. 1 and dropping to 7-4 after losing Saturday to UCLA. They also will be without quarterback Matt Barkley for the matchup with the Fighting Irish. Max Wittek will make his first career start after Barkley was injured at the end of the UCLA game. If Notre Dame loses, it could leave a muddle of one-loss teams vying for a spot in the BCS title game, even opening up the possibility of a second consecutive all-SEC national championship game.

We all knew it was coming. Notre Dame is back! On the SI cover that is. The Fighting Irish play USC this weekend during rivalry week and a victory locks up a BCS National Title game berth. The cover looks cool and all but my question is: does the jinx still apply if there isn’t The post Photo: Notre Dame Sports Illustrated Cover appeared first on No Coast Bias.

Brian Kelly, Notre Dame Get Another Boost in Bid for National Championship Game in Season That Just Keeps Giving

Brian Kelly came to Notre Dame knowing it would be a bit of a climb to get the team back into college football’s national championship conversation. But three years into the job, he’s right where he needs to be — and getting plenty of help in making those hopes a reality as soon as this year. Kelly has navigated the Irish to an 11-0 record this season, and while the critics...

Notre Dame Ranked #1 and Still Marching Towards BCS Title Game as Other Top Teams Falter

As Jason Whitlock so humorously pointed out, “Indiana University is #1 in basketball, Notre Dame is #1 in football, and the Pacers stink.  It’s the 1970s all over again.” For the first time in nearly twenty years, the Fighting Irish are on top of the college football world. Manti Te’o and the Fighting Irish are the undisputed #1 team in the country. (Image via ESPN.com...

NCAA Week 12: NBC’s Notre Dame Finale Earns Season-Low Overnight

NBC capped off a strong season of Notre Dame coverage with a season-low Saturday afternoon. Saturday’s Wake Forest/Notre Dame college football game drew a 1.7 overnight rating on NBC, according to USA Today — down a tick from the network’s seventh Notre Dame telecast last year, against Boston College (1.8), and flat compared to the seventh telecast in 2010, against Utah (1...

Notre Dame running back uses social media to announce Saturday will be his last home game

Notre Dame junior RB Cierre Wood announced through social media that Saturday was his final home game at Notre Dame Stadium. This likely means Wood plans on leaving for the NFL after this season. Head coach Brian Kelly is very good at keeping his top players, convincing them to finish all four years of eligibility rather than leave early, but Wood will have already graduated prior...

Irish end longest No. 1 drought in school history

Coach Brian Kelly wants to make certain Notre Dame isn't a one-week wonder at No. 1. The Fighting Irish (11-0) have the top ranking for the first time in 19 years heading into their game Saturday at Southern California following upset losses by Kansas State and Oregon. He went down to the trainers' room to try to get a sense of team's state of mind heading into USC,...

Notre Dame Football and the ACC: I called this a year ago

Editor’s note: I originally published this on December 29th, 2011. Looks like I saw the future a few months ahead: As Notre Dame prepares to kick off versus Florida State today in the Champs Sports Bowl, the answer to where ND fits in the long term conference expansion is becoming painfully obvious. The Irish will face their fourth ACC opponent, and look to go 4-0 in the Atlantic...

Sports Illustrated Goes Heavy On Notre Dame

Sports Illustrated will be featuring this Notre Dame cover art on this weeks edition. A bit much in my opinion, but I’m hoping the SI cover jinx comes true.

No. 20 Notre Dame 78, BYU 68

Notre Dame was facing one of the tough situations that come up for college basketball teams in late November: winning a consolation game in a tournament. The 20th-ranked Fighting Irish responded to its semifinal overtime loss to Saint Joseph's a night earlier by beating BYU 78-68 in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the Barclays Center on Saturday night...

Notre Dame #1 in both polls, BCS next: I feel your hate

Like Emperor Palpatine said to Skywalker, “I feel your anger, give in to your hate.” Especially if you’re a Michigan, USC, Michigan State, Purdue, Boston College, Miami or just plain college football fan. The most polarizing team in the land, Notre Dame, the college gridiron version of Rush Limbaugh (lots of fans, lots of haters) is the only remaining unbeaten, #1 in both polls...
