The BBVA Compass Bowl gives us a battle between two 6-6 teams; one from the Big East and one from the SEC. If you spent a lot of time watching either of these teams, you are an alumnus or you have a serious addiction to college football. Watching either of these teams play this year could have had a very bad effect on your health. Both the Panthers and the Rebels are under new leadership this year and there were signs that they are both moving in the right direction. Specifically, Pitt headed in the direction out of the Big East is a very good move at this point. I have always wondered why these bowls are shoved in between the BCS bowls and the BCS Championship, but I suppose we need something to pass the time until the NFL Wild Card weekend gets started. It’s another college football game and we are running short on those until next September. BBVA Compass Bowl  Ole Miss (SEC) vs. Pitt (Big East) (+3) January 5th 1 pm ESPN Ole Miss makes it to this bowl because Auburn and Arkansas were so embarrassingly bad this year. If it wasn’t for epically bad seasons by those two teams, Ole Miss would have never made it to a bowl this season. Thank goodness for them they play in the same division with both of the dregs of the SEC. Pitt made it to the post season because AD Steve Pederson had the foresight to schedule Gardner-Webb. Youngstown St. was a little above the talent level of Paul Chryst’s club in his first year at Pitt. The entire season was a very up and down one for Pitt as they beat Virginia Tech after losing their first two games and had to beat Rutgers and USF to end the season to reach a bowl. What to Expect: This is QB Tino Sunseri’s swan song at Pitt. The Panther’s much maligned signal caller has played for four different head coaches in his time with the Panthers. This bowl game could provide the lasting memory Pitt fans have of Sunseri and a win over an SEC team (even if it is Ole Miss) would be a sweet way to go out. Hugh Freeze has had a very successful first season in Oxford even if it was helped by the sudden ineptitude of his division rivals. More than anything, the extra practices for both of these squads under new head coaches will be helpful in determining the direction the programs are headed. Sunseri’s up and down nature will likely dictate the success of the Panthers, but Ole Miss has problems defending the pass which should help. I’ll flip a coin and say that Pitt goes to 7-6. Pitt wins, 33-32. -Doak
