BC falls short against No 8 Florida State

Boston College saw its hopes of an upset wiped out by a play that's signified the history of its football program. Jameis Winston threw for four touchdowns, including a 55-yard desperation pass time expired in the first half to help No. 8 Florida State rally from a slow start and beat Boston College 48-34 on Saturday. A few minutes before the opening kickoff, a video highlight of former Boston College Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie's infamous pass was shown on the scoreboards. A couple of hours later, it was a last-second TD pass that helped beat the Eagles. ''Letting up the big plays really hurt us and that's stating the obvious,'' BC first-year coach Steve Addazio said. ''I'm upset about the big plays. We let up too many big plays on defense and that's upsetting to me.'' The Eagles led 17-3 after the first quarter, using a couple of misdirection plays to catch the speedy Seminoles' defense out of position for a pair of scores. But, in the final two minutes of the opening half, Winston connected on two TD passes, including the 55-yard heave after eluding a pair of defensive lineman. ''You come out of that game and you don't feel good at all,'' Addazio said. ''It's all about winning, but you feel like you have the foundation in place of a team that's tough and going to come in battle.'' The Eagles felt like they had the Seminoles in trouble. ''There were times I think we had them backing up on the ropes and we needed to get the knockout blow and we couldn't get it,'' Eagles offensive lineman Ian White said. Winston had first-half touchdown passes of 56 and 10 yards to tie the game after BC, coming off a 28-point loss to Southern California, opened a 17-3 lead. The desperation heave to Kenny Shaw made it 24-17, then Winston added a fourth TD pass in the second half as the Seminoles (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) pulled away. In all, the Florida State freshman completed 17 of 28 passes for 330 yards and ran 14 times for 67 more. Chase Rettig completed 19 of 29 passes for 197 yards and a career-high four touchdowns for BC (2-2, 1-1), including a 52-yard score to Myles Willis that cut a three-score lead to 38-27. But the Eagles quarterback also threw an interception early in the fourth quarter that T.J. Williams returned 20 yards for a touchdown to make it 48-27. Rettig was also picked off by Nate Andrews on a fourth-and-13 from the Florida State 21 yard-line with 2 minutes left. Andre Williams ran 28 times for 149 yards for the Eagles. It was the fourth consecutive high-scoring game for the Seminoles, who lead the ACC with 51.25 points per game. But they didn't get the blowout they might have expected against a BC team that won just two games last season and finished last in the conference's Atlantic Division. BC took the lead on its opening possession when Spiffy Evans returned a punt 19 yards to the Florida State 36 and Williams ran six times in seven plays before Rettig hit C.J. Parsons for a 6-yard TD pass. The Eagles made it 14-3 when Rettig connected with Jake Sinkovec for a 3-yard score. It was 17-3 when Winston hit Rashad Greene for a 56-yard score, then went 4-for-4 and ran twice for 27 more yards on a seven-play, 80-yard drive that tied the game. The Eagles got the ball back with 1:49 left and tried to run out the clock before halftime, but Jimbo Fisher used his timeouts to get the Seminoles the ball back at their own 40 yard-line with 50 seconds to play. After Winston was sacked for a 9-yard loss, Devonta Freeman ran for 14 and the Seminoles hurried to the line of scrimmage to get one more play off. Winston received the snap just before time expired, eluded one tackler as he moved up in the pocket and another as he scrambled right, waved to his receivers to go deep and then let the ball go as he was hit. Shaw got position on safety Spenser Rositano, jumped at the 5 yard-line, landed at the 1 and fell into the end zone for the touchdown.
