Legendary Alabama head football coach Paul "Bear Bryant" would have turned 100 today. Bryant, born Sept. 11, 2013, was head coach first of Maryland (1945), then Kentucky (1946-1953), Texas A&M (1954-1957), then finally Alabama (1958-1982). His 323-85-17 career record includes six national titles, 14 SEC titles, and one Southwest Conference title. It's at Alabama where Bryant rose to national prominence, and where his legacy still casts a huge shadow, even over the program's success under current HC Nick Saban. In making the Crimson Tide a powerhouse in college football, he brought along with it the SEC, paving the way for the conference's present-day dominance in the sport. While some think Saban could someday manage to take the title of greatest coach in Alabama history away from Bryant, Bryant's accomplishments in turning the Crimson Tide into possibly the marquee team in the SEC will make that idea highly improbable.
