The Chuck Bednarik Award, presented by Cracker Barrel, is given out to the “Outstanding Collegiate Defensive Player of the Year” Here’s a preview on the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List candidates from the PAC 12 – A look into who they were last season, and who they can potentially be this season.

S John Boyett (Senior, Oregon)

Boyett has consistently been the leader for the underrated Ducks defense with his physical play. Last season he led the team in tackles with 105, adding 3.5 tackles for loss, seven passes broken up, and two blocked kicks. Expect to see Boyett making an impact on almost every play next season.

DE Dion Jordan (Senior, Oregon) While Boyett is the General in the secondary, Jordan is the anchor in the box. Jordan is an extremely versatile defensive end, who is athletic enough to line up as a linebacker regardless of his 6-6 size. Jordan should put excellent numbers as he broke out last season with 13 tackles for loss, including 7.5 sacks.

CB Jordan Poyer (Senior, Oregon State)

Poyer proved to be an elite corner with his 16 passes defended and four interceptions. Poyer is physical with great ball skills, and will have opportunities to prove to be a shutdown corner facing the best receivers in the Pac 12.

LB Shayne Skov (Senior, Stanford)

As a sophomore, Skov was one of the best linebackers in the Pac 12. The inside linebacker has great size at 6-3 and 253 pounds, and uses all of it with his aggressive style of play. In 2010 he finished with 84 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks.

LB Chase Thomas (Senior, Stanford)

Thomas was absolutely spectacular last season as he earned his way on to the Maxwell semifinalist list. He finished with 52 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and five forced fumbles. Thomas is a great leader and pass rusher; with Skov and Thomas healthy, Stanford obtains one of the scariest linebacker corps in the nation.

LB Dion Bailey (Sophomore, USC)

Bailey made a huge impact last season as a redshirt freshman posting 81 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. Bailey is a tough, physical linebacker with special athletic ability and solid awareness. He has the talent to put up extraordinary numbers during his USC career.

S T.J. McDonald (Senior, USC)

Last season McDonald flourished in USC’s secondary with 67 tackles, three interceptions and two deflections. McDonald is feared in the Pac 12, as he is known as a very hard hitter with plus-speed and athleticism.

CB Nickell Robey (Junior, USC)

Robey is generalized as undersized, but he makes up for it with his first-rate speed and natural instincts. Robey finished with 63 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, nine passes broken up and two interceptions.

DT Star Lotulelei (Senior, Utah)

Lotulelei’s numbers are incredible considering he faces double (or triple) teams nearly every play. Star totaled for 44 tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The 6-3 318 pound defensive tackle is remarkably powerful, but also displays great quickness off the line for his size. This rare combination will allow him to flourish once again in the Pac 12.
