According to a report on ESPN, the Big Ten will realign their football divisions for the 2014 season. Here is a breakdown of what is to come. The 2013 season will feature the same Legends and Leaders divisions that are currently in place. The Legends: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern; the Leaders: Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin. The new divisions The 2014 season will include the addition of Maryland and Rutgers which prompted the realignment. According to the ESPN report, these are the proposed new divisions: East Indiana Maryland Michigan   Michigan State Ohio State   Penn State Rutgers   West Illinois Iowa   Minnesota Nebraska   Northwestern Purdue   Wisconsin   With the exception of Indiana vs Purdue, there will no longer be protected crossover games. Additionally, the Big Ten is expected to move to a 9-game conference schedule, starting with the 2016 season. My initial thoughts are, that the East Division appears to be much stronger than the West. There are four very good teams in the proposed East – Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State. The West has just two very good teams in Nebraska and Wisconsin.
