While most American consumers are familiar with Black Friday- the day following Thanksgiving, when overzealous housewives bull-rush Best Buy’s and Target’s nationwide like an Alabama defensive lineman chasing an SEC quarterback- it is actually “Black Sunday” which is most familiar to college football fans. It’s the day following the final full Saturday of regular season action. And for coaches on the hot seat, it’s usually a day filled with anxiety and resume-updating, and too often ends with the boss handing over a pink slip.
And today, Black Sunday, November 27, 2011, was no exception.
In a fall which has already seen Mike Stoops, Houston Nutt, Joe Paterno and others fired for various reasons, the coaching carousel took a few more spins Sunday, with a handful of other head bosses being relieved of their duties. Some of the more high-profile names let go included Illinois’ Ron Zook, Kansas’ Turner Gill, and in a piece of information that just came across the newswire, Arizona S...

You look at the pic above and think “what does a celebration from the Illinois Fighting Illini 2004-05 college basketball season have to do with this?” The long overdue firing of the school’s college football coach Ron Zook.
Well, when I searched for google images of “Illini celebration,” it was all hoops images. (which says something about why the Zooker is being jettisoned...
Arizona State fired coach Dennis Erickson after a fourth straight season of failing to live up to expectations. Athletic director Lisa Love made the announcement after meeting with the 64-year-old coach. Erickson will be allowed to coach the Sun Devils in their bowl game, which will be determined on Sunday.
Ron Zook, now the former head coach at the University of Illinois, ended his tenure at Illinois the way he began it, with dignity and class. He took the Sunday morning news from athletic director Mike Thomas like a man and proceeded to meet the media formally one last time Sunday afternoon surrounded by family, friends and many of his football players.
In 2009, a very underachieving Illini football team finished 3-9. Picked as high as third by some Big Ten and college football pundits, the horrible record was nothing short of a catastrophe for the resume of Ron Zook and the Illinois program.
Or so I thought.
Logic dictated then Illinois Athletic Director Ron Guenther can Zook then and there. Unfortunately, Guenther had FOOLISHLY...
Kids today have no idea that Dennis Erickson used to be one of the hottest names on the coaching trail, whether it was the college ranks or the pros. It didn't matter. If there was an opening, Erickson's name was on the list. In what is one of the great mysteries of our time, he somehow kept getting hired. His latest, and probably last gig, is at Arizona State. Reports are...
With Dennis Ericksons ouster, Arizona State is in the market for a new head coach. Theres plenty of debate over who the next ringleader will be, from offensive gurus (Kevin Sumlin) to pirate-admiring personalities (Mike Leach) to retreads (Mike Bellotti). Theres even talk of bringing a red-hot Boise State coach to Tempe. Where have we heard that before?
Yep, its the same group of...
Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson addresses media after the Sun Devils' 47-38 defeat to Cal. Below is Part 2 of 2.
Dennis Erickson is out as Arizona State coach, a university official told The Associated Press, after another season in which the results didn't meet the expectations for the Sun Devils.
Dennis Erickson led Arizona State to bowl eligibility for the first time in four years with an impressive start to the season. A monumental collapse by the Sun Devils may keep him from being there to enjoy it with his team. Erickson plans to meet with Athletic Director Lisa Love sometime in the next few days to discuss his future with the program, and most indications point to his...
