Against the Broncos, Bronco Mendenhall made one of the dumbest coaching moves of the year in the BYU vs. Boise State football game Thursday night. Offensively, BYU was terrible all night. The Cougars gained 95 yards on their last drive of the game, and that was equal to what they gained the whole rest of the game. They turned the ball over 5 times in the game. The starting quarterback was benched in the third quarter and replaced by a freshman quarterback, a quarterback who probably couldn’t throw better than I could. And yet in the middle of the fourth quarter they trailed by only one touchdown as the Cougar defense stifled the Boise State team. The Broncos only score came on an interception return. They have a kicker they couldn’t trust, who missed a 33 yard chip-in field goal earlier in the game. In the second half Boise State couldn’t buy a yard. Now like I said, BYU trailed by 7 points in the fourth quarter. Miraculously, the Cougars put a drive together led by the legs of fres...

Boise State Beats BYU via Split Decision 7-6

Over the last few years, Chris Petersen and the Boise State Broncos have built up their reputation for tough defenses and efficient offenses. On Thursday night, their defense looked good but their offense was far from efficient. Petersen has also built up a reputation for being one of the top coaches in college football but today it was his opponent who simply out coached himself...

Boise State 7, BYU 6: Broncos win a sloppy one at home

There is no nice way to put it: Unless you have a fetish for solid defensive football and offensive ineptitude otherwise, the first 57 minutes or so of Thursday night’s showdown between BYU and Boise were a little bit boring. Ok, a “little bit” boring is a bit of an understatement. The first 57 minutes were awful. They were painful. They turned normally rational men...

Boise State Wins With Defense Over BYU 7-6

How can you tell the defense was dominant for both teams, a touchdown by a nose guard was the difference in the game. Early in the third quarter Boise State nose guard Mike Atkinson intercepted a Riley Nelson pass and took to the distance 36 yards for the Broncos only touchdown.  Atkinson did a little free lancing to get the pick six. “I wasn’t really supposed...

Sports Psychology: What BYU needs to do to be ready for Boise State

My whole life I have been involved in sports. I have experienced heart breaking losses and the euphoria of winning the big games.  I am now in my senior year at BYU and am in my final season of eligibility to compete on the track team. It is a somewhat surreal feeling, but the things I have learned from playing a sport for such a great university have been life changing. One of...

Sponsored: NECTRESSE Sweetener Sweet Play

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Nectresse™ Sweetener for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine. Boise State and BYU played a stingy defensive battle Thursday night that many would have been wise to turn off and head to bed early, but Boise State defensive tackle Mike Atkinson's 36-yard interception return for a touchown was all the Broncos would need...

Game Recap: BYU Looses on Two-Point Gamble

The Brigham Young Cougars (2-2) scored on a Taysom Hill 4-yard touchdown run with 3:37 to play in the fourth quarter to draw within one point. Rather than tie the game by kicking the extra point, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall did not hesitate to go for two-points and the win. Hill’s pass to Cody Hoffman fell short, and Boise State got the win, 7-6. The game started with the...

Poll Results: Should Jamaal Williams start at running back?

Brigham Young Cougar fans said Jamaal Williams should have been the starting running back against Boise State. In a closely contested race, the "Yes" votes edged out the "No" votes by a 48% to 43% margin. The other 9% of voters were undecided. My vote is "Yes." I have seen enough. If you follow the site closely, you know I was skeptical of Michael Alisa...

Nelson Needs To Endorse Hill As BYU's Starting Quarterback

Brigham Young Cougars quarterback Riley Nelson played the worst game of his life against the Boise State Broncos. Although the team doctors haven't given the BYU coaches a medical diagnosis that justifies not playing Nelson, it is evident he is not physically fit enough to play. As a team captain and one of the most respected leaders on the team, Nelson needs to accept this fact...

Mendenhall defends Riley in wake of BYU loss

Brigham Young coach Bronco Mendenhall wasted little time in squelching any notion the Cougars will have a new starting quarterback next week. Moments after BYU fell 7-6 to No. 24 Boise State Thursday night, Mendenhall came to the defense of lefty Riley Nelson, who threw three interceptions, failed to put any points on the board and was sent to the bench in the third quarter. Speculation...

Boise St. claims defensive battle

Nose tackle Mike Atkinson returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State held off BYU 7-6 on Thursday night in a game dominated by defense. Boise State (2-1) forced five turnovers and held the Cougars (2-2) to 200 total yards. The Boise State offense wasn't that much better, managing 261 total yards. Atkinson's big play came early in the third...
