Zach Maynard took a small bit of satisfaction out of his first Big Game knowing he turned in one of his best performances of the season and considerably closed the gap in the long-running rivalry. Andrew Luck and Stanford took everything else. Maynard threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns before California's comeback bid came up just short, losing 31-28 to No. 8 Stanford on a rain-soaked Saturday night. ''We matched their game, we did a great job. I'm proud of my boys, I'm proud of my team,'' Maynard said. ''We fed off each other and we were locked in and focused. We were poised coming into the game. We knew we had to control the game and we came out guns blazing, we left it all on the field.'' The pelting rain did little to slow Stanford down once it started rolling. Luck revived his Heisman Trophy campaign by tossing scores to Levine Toilolo and Ryan Hewitt, keeping the Cardinal's slim chances of a Pac-12 title and national championship alive.
