1. Wisconsin is a BCS National Championship contender.  Don’t think for a minute one player can’t make a difference.  Russell Wilson (above) is that player.  Playing Nebraska’s “famed and hyped” Blackshirts (their supposed “defense”) last night, the Badgers had another field day…and this wasn’t against Mankato State, folks.  Nebraska was a Top-10 team and Wisconsin schooled them.  I know the Badgers need a lot of things to go right for them to get to the title game, but certainly some of the teams ahead of them can and will lose.  Alabama and LSU will play each other on Nov. 5…one will lose.  Stanford, which had a nice win yesterday against UCLA, plays Oregon on Nov. 11 and could lose.  Oklahoma plays Oklahoma State on Dec. 3 in their annual Bedlam game, and I am sure OK St. will be seeking revenge after last year’s beat-down…and with their prolific offense, it’ll be a shootout, so maybe OU loses then.  Then there’s Boise State.  They will roll through their schedule undefeated…but seriously, I would be surprised if they were chosen over a one-loss SEC, Big 12 or Big 10 team…especially when strength of schedule comes into play. SO…Wisconsin COULD get to that special place.  Don’t be surprised.

2. Steve Spurrier cannot develop quarterbacks as well as he developed himself.   Another “shocking” home loss for South Carolina last night has exposed them.  QB Stephen Garcia (he of the six suspensions…) is not a leader, and USC (yes, folks, that’s what they are called here in the southeast…) is going nowhere.  Lucky for them they are in the East Division of the SEC…so they could get to play for the league championship.  The Gamecocks struggled against Navy a couple of weeks ago…and lost last night to a very average Auburn team.  The rabid fans in Columbia will be up in arms today…

3. I am officially on the bandwagon for Clemson.  I said if they beat Virginia Tech, I would join, so where do I pay my dues?  Do I have to put an IPTAY (the booster club which used to be known as “I Pay Ten a Year”…but it is much higher now) sticker on my car? Led by QB Tajh Boyd (above), they dismantled the Hokies, in Blacksburg, and now get to face, in succession, Boston College, Maryland and North Carolina before the showdown in Atlanta against Georgia TechThe Tigers made ACC history, becoming the first league team to beat three Top-25 teams in three weeks.  They also did it with their defense, which forced two first-half turnovers and three sacks.  Andre Branch was involved in all of the sacks (and considering they only had four in their first four games…WOW!) which was more surprising, I think, than anything.  The win broke a five-game Tech winning streak in the series.  So, the 5-0 Tigers will be on the move…and should be 8-0 going into Atlanta at the end of the month!

4. Texas A&M must be reeling.  Last week, they had a 17-point lead at the half against Oklahoma State.  On Saturday, they had an 18-point halftime lead against Arkansas, who looked really inept.  Just what Coach Bobby Petrino said in the Hogs’ locker room at halftime, I don’t know, but I’m sure he reminded his players that the Aggies played a terrible third quarter the week before and anything could happen.  It did.  TAMU was out-scored 25-3 in the second half, and Arkansas looked every bit the SEC contender they were supposed to be prior to the injury bug hitting them hard.  Texas A&M is now 2-2 on the year…and they were a Top-10 team in pre-season.  Happens to someone every year.

5. If Boise State wins out, will they get a shot at the BSC National Championship game?  Doubtful.  The strength of schedule thing will hurt them.  It’s not their fault.  They went to Atlanta to open the season and easily beat Georgia, an SEC team.  They travelled to Toledo and beat the Rockets…they beat Tulsa at home…they are playing out of their conference, but it won’t be enough.  Boise still has to play TCU, which now has lost twice this season (following their shocking loss to SMU) on Nov. 12 and travel the following week to San Diego State…but really, led by QB Kellen Moore (above), who directs his offense like a world-class conductor playing Beethoven, the Broncos will end up undefeated…and probably back in the Fiesta Bowl.

As we get to Week 6, the pretenders are falling and the contenders are showing up…ready to play, dominate and WIN.  As we get fully into conference games, each one is important.  If you want to be in a big bowl, you’d better show it…and more.

I will be back on Thursday with my Top Five College Games to Watch (Week 6).
