The season is already past the halfway point in college football and a sure sign of this is the release of the BCS standings that came out earlier this week.

Teams at the top of the standings are looking to continue to stay undefeated and keep their preseason goals alive of winning a BCS National Championship.  This week is has the potential for major upsets as many undefeated teams are playing ranked opponents.

Here are the point spreads and picks for the weekend’s top games, plus a link below to another fantasy college football freeroll tournament from our friends at Daily Joust.

College Football Picks and Point Spreads OCTOBER 21

#15 West Virginia v Syracuse

  • West Virginia-Syracuse spread: West Virginia -13.5
  • West Virginia-Syracuse over/under 58

The Mountaineers are back in primetime this week when the head to the Carrier Dome to play Syracuse on Friday night.  West Virginia is head and shoulders above everyone else in the Big East and Syracuse is looking to prove they can compete within their conference.

If Syracuse wants to pull off the upset in this game they are going to have to be stellar on defense to stop the Mountaineers high octane offense.  West Virginia is averaging over 500 yards per game which ranks in the top 20 in college football.  West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith is having a great season and has not thrown an interception since their loss to LSU.

This game will be close at first but West Virginia’s offense will be too much for Syracuse to handle and that is why I am going to lay the points with the Mountaineers.  West Virginia-Syracuse spread pick: West Virginia -13.5

OCTOBER 22

#20 Auburn v #1 LSU

  • Auburn-LSU spread: LSU -22.5
  • Auburn-LSU over/under 46.5

This game features the defending national champions heading to Baton Rouge to face the number 1 team in nation, LSU.  The Tigers have steamrolled against their competition and dominated in the SEC so far.  The Tigers are 7-0 and have beaten every team they have faced by double digits for the first time in school history.

LSU has the fourth ranked defense and they are facing an Auburn team that is getting very little production from the quarterback.  Gene Chizik announced that quarterback Clint Moseley would be making his first start after replacing Barrett Trotter.

LSU has dominated this season and there is no reason to think that this week is going to be any different.  In this game it is tough to go with a quarterback making his first start and that is why I am going to lay the points with LSU. Auburn-LSU spread pick: LSU -22.5

#4 Oklahoma State v Missouri

  • Oklahoma State-Missouri spread: Oklahoma State -7
  • Oklahoma State-Missouri over/under 68.5

Missouri might be the best 3-3 team in the country and all of their losses this season have come on the road to ranked opponents.  This game has upset written all over it as Missouri has won their last 10 games at home and are coming off a blowout win against Iowa State.

Oklahoma State boasts the nation’s second best offense, averaging over 550 yards per game and scoring 50 points a contest.  Missouri has a very solid offense this season as well and is averaging close to 36 points per game.  Missouri is getting 236.5 rushing yards per game which ranks 13th in college football.

I would not be shocked if Missouri won this game but I think the safe play in this game is to take the over since both these teams have outstanding offenses.  Oklahoma State-Missouri over/under pick: over

#6 Wisconsin v #16 Michigan State

  • Wisconsin-Michigan State spread: Wisconsin -7.5
  • Wisconsin-Michigan State over/under 47.5

Wisconsin is making a strong case that they will be playing in the national title game.  If they want to make people believers than they are going to win this game convincingly.   Wisconsin’s offense has played very well so far but has yet to face a defense that dominates teams like Michigan State.

Teams are struggling to score points against the Spartans and are averaging under 11 points per game.  In Michigan State’s last game they did their best imitation of the Oakland Raiders and racked up 6 unsportsmanlike penalties in their 28-14 victory over Michigan.

Wisconsin isn’t going to be intimated by Michigan State and I look for them to be just as physical.  I like Wisconsin to stay undefeated in this game and cover as well. Wisconsin-Michigan State spread pick: Wisconsin -7.5

USC v Notre Dame

  • USC-Notre Dame spread: Notre Dame -8.5
  • USC-Notre Dame over/under 57.5

These teams might not be ranked but this game still has all the makings of a classic in this historic rivalry.   Notre Dame has rebounded from their 0-2 start and has looked like a team on the rise winning four straight.  USC has not played since last Thursday and Notre Dame is coming bye giving each team plenty of time to prepare for this game.

Notre Dame’s defense is going to be tested in this game by Matt Barkley (1,782 yards, 68.2%, 16 TDs, 4 INT, Rating 155.4) who looks to continue his fine season.  USC will be hampered by the loss of starting running back Mark Tyler who dislocated his shoulder last week against Cal.  USC will look to Curtis McNeal (289 yards, 7.0 AVG, 2 TD) to fill that void and so far this season he has been very solid.

I like Notre Dame to win their fifth in a row and that is why I am going to lay the points with the Irish. USC-Notre Dame spread pick: Notre Dame -8.5
