On Paper #1 Alabama vs #5 LSU 8PM CBS A rematch of last years championship game is what is expected for tonight’s battle in Death Valley. The Crimson Tide come in with everything working on all cylinders. The defense is at it’s usual self, giving up only 8.1 pts per game, which leads the nation. Their offense is much improved over last year as AJ McCarron is sneaking into the Heisman talk with his proficiency. McCarron has a 69% completion percentage, thrown 18 tds and has 0 interceptions on the season. They currently have the 19th most difficult schedule in the nation but with #5 LSU and the #16 Texas A&M the next two weeks, that ranking should climb. That will also answer in naysayers about who they’ve played and their lofty ranking. The Tigers have two things working for them…Les Miles and Death Valley! Miles is one of the nation’s most interesting coaches since taking over for Saban in ’05. His record of 82-19 is just one thing that he brings to the table but he also brings the intangibles, just like his quote after the LSU victory over South Carolina this year “Death Valley is where opponents dreams come to die”! The problem with Miles’ Tigers is the offense. Junior Zach Mettenberger has not been reliable at the quarterback position with a completion percentage under 57% and only 7 TDs to 4 INTs. To be successful with a great defense he really just needs to be much like McCarron, a game manager who keeps his turnovers low and make the passes they ask him to make. Mettenberger is not that QB and he has shown an inability to win games with his talent. This is a down year for the Tigers offense and they really need more out of their QB if they want to make it back to the National Championship game. The 9-6 OT regular season game from last year will not happen as America will see a dominate Defense that is complimented by an assertive and efficient offense. Look for the penalties to play a big role as LSU continues to draw the flags. In their game against Texas A&M, they had more penalty yards that passing!! Death Valley keeps it close early but the lack of Tiger offense and the Tide’s ability to do everything right will eventually create a big margin of victory for the visitors. @StraitSportsG’s Pick Bama 29 LSU 13 UPSET POTENTIAL #2 Oregon vs #17 USC 7PM FOX The Ducks can’t lose…can they? Oregon has a shot to make it back to the title game since their loss to Cam Newton and Auburn but they must be undefeated. This game was supposed to give them a chance to boost their strength of schedule but USC and the Fighting Lane Kiffin’s have surprisingly lost 2 games, both on the road. The Trojans were a pre-season pick by multiple sources to win the championship but now they have a chance at spoiling that chance for the Ducks. The Ducks offense will not be stopped but will their defense continue to play well, even against a dangerous offense in Southern Cal? Matt Barkley may be out of the Heisman running (he’s not winning) but he can salvage his season and at least pick up a ticket to New York for the festivities if he can repeat last year’s performance against the Ducks in a 38-35 victory. Last year’s game saw a 2 loss USC beat then #4 Oregon in Eugene. This has the makings of an instant classic and a possible replay of last years final. There will be high flying action and this match up will give you something to watch if the LSU/Bama turns in to a stinker early. Watch for Marcus Mariota get a lot of national attention after this game, win or lose. @StraitSportsG’s Pick Ducks 44 USC 40 Don’t Bother Scheduling If you ever wonder if networks really work together, this weekends top matchup’s will let you know they don’t! The 2 games that any college football fan wants to watch, no matter alliances, are the LSU/Bama and USC/Oregon games…and what happens? They are on at nearly the same time! The Oregon Ducks should be the angriest about the situation because finally people east of Oregon have a reason to watch and it’s before bed time. Yet, the SEC powerhouses play at 8. This means America gets an hour to watch Oregon’s high flying offense and improved defenses but that won’t be enough as Oregon needs to catch the eye of more voters if they want to move up in the BCS standings. It’s just a shame we couldn’t have a 6/9 staggered start, just think of how many viewers the networks are splitting when both could have had all of them! It’s making me pull my hair out and wearing my remote out…at least they are not on ESPN3! I just wish they would put their heads together for everyone’s benefit, even theirs.

AJ McCarron cries on sidelines after comeback win vs. LSU

Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron was so overcome by emotion after leading the Crimson Tide to a go-ahead score against LSU on Saturday night that he began crying on the sidelines. McCarron and Bama’s offense were quiet in the second half of the game in Baton Rouge. They lost their lead and failed to score until the final minute of the game, when they went 72 yards over five plays...

Did AJ McCarron and Kenjon Barner shake up the Heisman race?

Although Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron has had an excellent season, he has yet to be put in a position where his team has needed him to pull its fat from the fire. That’s what I wrote this past Thursday in my preview of this weekend’s Heisman matchups. And, as it turned out, it was McCarron’s [...]

The Program’s Picks: Where Les Miles Having Extra Time to Gameplan May Not Be Such a Good Thing

Another year where the degenerates who run this site attempt to pick games for the upcoming college football weekend. No. 1 Alabama edges SEC foe LSU

With Alabama's hopes of a second straight national title hanging by a thread, A.J. McCarron shook off a dismal second half and guided the Crimson Tide right down the field. Talk about a Saturday night stunner in Death Valley. McCarron read an LSU blitz and flipped a swing pass to T.J. Yeldon, who did the rest on a 28-yard touchdown with 51 seconds remaining that gave the top...

Video of the Day

By now you've seen almost every possible view of the A.J. McCarron screen pass that T.J. Yeldon took 28 yards to the house to beat LSU Saturday night, but you haven't seen one as cool as this. This video from Buffalo Wild Wings in Tuscaloosa captures the nail biting excitement and explosive jubilation of Alabama's game winning TD in Baton Rouge. You're gonna want...

Saban: Game manager label is high praise for QB

Alabama coach Nick Saban says game manager is the ultimate compliment for a quarterback. He says that's what the top-ranked Crimson Tide has in the nation's top-rated passer AJ McCarron. No. 5 LSU would love to get similar efficiency from strong-armed Zach Mettenberger in Saturday night's game. Both are supported by punishing tailbacks and terrific defenses. McCarron...

Alabama-LSU lives up to the hype this time

BATON ROUGE, LA No one could call this one boring. That, of course, was the knock on the last two meetings between Alabama and LSU, the first being settled solely on the feet of the field goal kickers and the second, the BCS Championship Game, being another defensive slugfest that put many on the east coast asleep before halftime. Not this one. Unlike the other two, this year...

Or just another roll of the Tide? Here are three bold predictions.1. Alabama's Defense Will Outscore LSU's OffenseAlabama's defense will outscore LSU's offense by two touchdowns. This may not be...

Crimson Tide Emerges From Death Valley 9-0 in Final Minute of Play

If I had to guess, I would imagine that for a diehard Alabama fan, watching the LSU game yesterday was about how I felt watching the 2011 Michigan/Notre Dame game (with less significant implications and more overtimes). As I was watching this SEC matchup last night, I was absolutely stunned that this was the very same LSU team that almost lost to a 2-7 Auburn team earlier this year...

More LSU/Bama: Bobby Hebert tossed from Press Box

((ht: yahoo/forde)) Louisiana legend, former New Orleans Saints QB and New Orleans Sports Talk Radio host Bobby Hebert has what you could "Say" is a larger than life personality. And that personality is not exactly endearing itself to those in charge at LSU. You see, Mr. Hebert found himself being escorted from the press box Saturday night during the LSU/Alabama...

Bama Escapes LSU In One Piece

AJ McCarron was, to put it in a word, REALLY ineffective in the second half against LSU as the top-ranked team in the country was in a fight that a lot of people knew would happen eventually... "Every Thursday, we go through a two-minute drill," McCarron said after. "We go against a pretty tough defense in practice, too. The confidence level was that we would go...
