Boulder, CO. With less than three weeks until the opening game against the in-state rivals from up north, the Colorado Buffaloes still don’t know who will be under center taking the snaps. Nick Hirschman, Connor Wood, and Jordan Webb are all in the hunt to be the Buffaloes starter in 2012. With a scrimmage schedule for this weekend, there is a good chance whoever plays the best in that game will be a leg up on the competition. Hirschman is the only one of the three who has taken any snaps as a Buff, and may very well be the favorite to win the job. With September 1st rapidly approaching, the choice by coach Jon Embree should come in the next week or so.
Last season, Nick Hirschman played sparingly, as foot problems caused him to miss much of the season. In his brief time on the field, he completed just 51% of his passes with zero TD’s and zero interceptions. He does have outstanding size, being listed at 6’4″ and 230 lbs. The other two QB’s vying to be the starter are transfers. Connor Wood is a sophomore, who was at the University of Texas last year. When it became apparent that he would not get an opportunity to be a starter there, he decided to transfer to Boulder. Wood also has nice size at 6’3″ and 225 lbs. Jordan Webb has the most experience on the collegiate level, playing at the University of Kansas the past two years. He has career numbers of 3,079 yards passing, a 60.6 completion percentage, as well as tossing 20 TD’s and 20 interceptions. Webb is the smallest of the three CU QB’s, listed at 6’1″ and 205 lbs. He has proven to be scrappy, and will make this decision for Coach Embree a difficult one.
With the Buffaloes trying to bounce back and be a factor in the PAC-12, having three viable quarterbacks can be a blessing as well as a curse. If none of the three stand out in the next week or two, it could be a revolving door as to who the signal caller is in 2012. Uncertainty at this position could make for another long year in Boulder.
