The Liberty Bowl had the distinction of being the first "cold weather" bowl game, beginning in Philadelphia in 1959, and the first indoor bowl game, moving to the Atlantic City Convention Hall in 1964, before sagging attendance finally forced it to Tennessee for good in 1965. The winner of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy earned an automatic bid in the 1980s and 90s, before the game struck its current partnership with Conference USA.
