Two games into Big Ten Conference play and Brady Hoke’s Michigan Wolverines are looking every bit the part of the preseason favorite to win the Legends Division and Big Ten Conference title after pummeling the hapless Illinois Fighting Illini 45-0 in Ann Arbor on Saturday.
Denard Robinson had his second consecutive “Robinson” type day compiling 159-yards passing on 7 of 11 completions with two touchdowns to go with his 128-yards rushing on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
The Wolverine defense was guided by the relentless sophomore linebacker Jake Ryan who led defensive coordinator Greg Mattison’s group with 11 tackles, one forced-fumble and a sack-and-a-half.
In posting the first Wolverine shut-out of the season, the Michigan defense knocked Illinois starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase out of the game early in the second quarter with an apparent shoulder injury. They then limited the Illini offense to 134-yards combined with 29 of those yards coming by way of the pass. Michigan on the other hand put up 353 total yards rushing and added another 174 yards passing for a combined 527 yards of total offense.
The game was Michigan’s official homecoming and the Wolverines and their fans could not have asked for a better team to host for such and event.
Next up brings Mark Dantonio’s Michigan State Spartans to Ann Arbor and presents the Wolverines an opportunity to snap the four-game losing streak they currently own vs. MSU.
