During Monday’s media availability session head coach Will Muschamp announced that redshirt freshman Marcus Maye would be one of the starter’s at safety to start the season, alongside redshirt junior Cody Riggs. Maye and Riggs will have some big shoes to fill as they try and replace former Gators Matt Elam and Josh Evans, both of whom are now playing in the NFL. Cody Riggs (pictured) will be joined by Marcus Maye in the backend of the Gators’ defense. Maye, who has no game experience at Florida, was rated as a four-star prospect by various recruiting services and was thought of as one of the best safeties in the country coming out of high school in 2012. At 6-foot, 200 pounds he is the bigger of the two starters and will likely fill the role vacated by Evans. Maye had been competing with junior Jabari Gorman for the job. Unlike Maye, Riggs has had the other safety spot locked down for most of fall camp. After missing most of last season after fracturing his foot in the game against Texas A&M, he will make the switch from cornerback to safety this season. At 5-9, 184 pounds, Riggs is undersized for the position, but he has certain attributes that should ease the transition. A track star in high school, Riggs has the speed to cover the entire field and his experience at corner should help his coverage skills. Elam, an All-American, and Evans will not be an easy duo to replace, but for now Maye and Riggs will get the first shot at being the Gators last line of defense.
