Online Sports Guys:
Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher told me last spring
that the team most pundits thought was a national championship contender last
year he has this year.
Last night at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee,
Florida FSU’s 49-37 win over Clemson may have proved Fisher’s statement.
Here’s some highlights from the Seminoles big win.
(Thanks WTXL-TV Tallahassee, Fla)
Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel may have put
himself in the Heisman Trophy conversation with his best performance as a
Seminole. Manuel had career highs in
passing yards (380) and rushing yards (102).
Manuel became the first Seminole quarterback to threw of over 300 yards
and run for over 100 yards since Charlie Ward did it in 1992.
Ironically it was Ward, a Heisman Trophy winner, who
offered Manuel advice before the game.
“I talked to him last night.” Manuel said. “ He told
me to go out there and take what they gave me. That's a huge
“I am going t...
BEST OF MAXIM
EJ Manuel threw for a career-high 380 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 102 yards as fourth-ranked Florida State rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to defeat No. 10 Clemson 49-37 on Saturday night.
Chris Thompson ran for 104 yards and two scores and James Wilder Jr. added two touchdowns runs for the Seminoles, who broke open a close game with 35 second-half points....
Jimbo Fisher with E.J. Manuel.
FSU head football coach Jimbo Fisher has a possible Heisman Trophy candidate on his hands with Seminole starting quarterback E.J. Manuel. That don't expect you can Fisher to orchestrate a massive Heisman campaign like the one centered around former FSU QB Christian Ponder. It seems that he has either moved on from such bawdy schemes, or ...
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. EJ Manuel already has established himself as one of the top senior quarterbacks in the country. His career completion percentage of 66.6 percent is tops among Florida State quarterbacks, including a pair of Heisman Trophy winners in Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke.
Manuel is 16-4 as a starter, including a bowl win over No. 18 West Virginia as a freshman in coach...
The last time ESPN GameDay stopped in Tallahassee was around this time last year when Oklahoma hurt E.J. Manuel and the Sooners won, 23-13. We were outside The Doak for last year’s show and had never seen people drinking from kegs at a GameDay stop. Of the 7 career GameDay stops we’ve made,
Florida State is the biggest booze-fest you’ll find. People trashed at 9:30 a.m. We...
Although Florida State's defense looked vulnerable against a high-powered Clemson offense, it clamped down when needed and allowed EJ Manuel and crew to rally for a huge victory.
Yes, a defense that had allowed one field goal in in the first three games gave up 37 points and 426 yards Saturday night - but took control in time for the offense do its thing. After Chandler Catanzaro...
After three weeks of relatively mundane football action, it’s safe to say that Saturday proved to be the first epic college football Saturday we’ve had in the 2012 season. From an epic E.J. Manuel performance in Tallahassee, to another fine Notre Dame defensive effort and a near upset on the Plains, we as fans were treated to some truly spectacular football.
And you better believe...
Florida State sent a major statement to the college football world that it's as close to returning to its incredible form of the 1990s as it has been in a decade in pulling away from Clemson 49-37 in a matchup of top-10 ACC teams.
E.J. Manuel entered into the Heisman Trophy campaign, the Seminoles cemented themselves as legitimate national title contenders, and coach Jimbo...
Florida State vs. Clemson was the clear-cut game of the week, and it was an impressive showing by multiple NFL talents, both seniors and juniors. But the quarterback battle was at the forefront, and a surprising victor emerged in my books. That, plus gushing over the Notre Dame defense and it’s Heisman contender once again, general scouting notes from across college football,...
In the sport of college football, unfortunately, too often we hear about the “numbers crunch.” How scholarships can come and go, and be taken away by a head coach at the drop of the hat. Sometimes it's to make way for a better player, sometimes it’s because a college coach has decided a high school recruit isn’t worthy, and sometimes, well, we never get an answer. But...
Week 4 of the college football season is in the books, so who had some of the top performances?
Florida State and EJ Manuel- Can you believe that the Seminoles had not beaten a ranked team at home since 2005, until last night’s win over Clemson. The #4 Seminoles proved their preseason hype was worth all the buzz with their 49-37 victory over Clemson. They are a legit threat...
TALLAHASSEE Florida State had not been in this position in 2012. And when it happened last year, the result was a loss.
The Seminoles found themselves trailing by 14 points in the third quarter Saturday night and things were not going well. Mistakes were piling up.
There was a fumble on a punt return. Two missed field goals. Two Clemson trick plays, one for a touchdown and another...
Florida State has long awaited an explosive rushing attack to really flourish under head coach Jimbo Fisher’s offensive system.
There were plenty of storylines to come out of the best college football Saturday of 2012 so far, but as the clock turned to midnight on this particular Saturday, there was one which stood out above them all: Florida State is back. Not just as a Top 10 team. Not just as a perennial ACC favorite. But as a tried and true National Championship contender too.
The Seminoles weren’t...
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida States running game is far from a concern anymore.
A ground attack that often struggled on third-and-1 and in goal-line situations in 2011 is now averaging 7.5 yards per carry.
Plenty can be said for senior Chris Thompsons return from fractured vertebrae. And the maturity and experience showed by sophomore James Wilder Jr. But behind an offensive line...
