(Photo: The Fisher Family via Washington Post) Warchant reports that when Florida State and Pittsburgh take the field for the opener on Labor Day night, both teams will be wearing a special helmet patch. The patch will raise awareness for Kidz1stFund, an organization created by Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher and his wife Candi, that helps with Fanconi Anemia, a rare blood disease carried by the Fishers’ youngest son, Ethan. Fisher is not the only ACC head coach who has a child fighting the disease however. Virginia’s fourth-year head coach Mike London also has a daughter with the rare disease. The two spoke about it on a College Gameday special when Florida State hosted Virginia in November of 2011. The patch will be blue with a balloon and the words, “I fight Fanconi” across the middle with the website for Kidz1stFund at the bottom. The disease is only found in about one in every 350,000 births and leads to bone marrow failure. Ethan Fisher’s fight with the rare disease has been well documented and the young Fisher has served as an inspiration in the past. Former running back Chris Thompson and Fisher developed a close relationship when Fisher gave Thompson a toy car after Thompson’s 2011 season was cut short by a back injury that threatened his playing career. Thompson returned to the field last season to lead FSU with 687 yards rushing before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Thompson was taken by the Washington Redskins in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
