I know what some of you may be thinking, but as the Florida football beat writer I felt this was something I couldn’t let go unaddressed. Gator football fans can rest easy again with the news that their favorite son has found a new home in the NFL. The New England Patriots signed former Gator great Tim Tebow to a two-year contract Tuesday. The Patriots will become the former Heisman Trophy winner’s third team in four years in the NFL. After what virtually amounts to a wasted year with the New York Jets in 2012, Tebow has landed in a seemingly ideal spot in New England. For starters, he will be reunited with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was the head coach of the Broncos in 2010 when Denver drafted Tebow in the first round. McDaniels won’t be the only familiar face Tebow finds in New England. He will join his former Gators teammates Jermaine Cunningham, Brandon Spikes and Aaron Hernandez. New England should also provide Tebow with much more stability than he had during his time in New York. There won’t be the constant questions each week as to if or when he will start. Tom Brady is a future Hall of Famer and firmly entrenched as New England’s starting quarterback and Ryan Mallett has been the backup for the past two seasons. This should provide Tebow with a chance to sit and continue to develop as a quarterback behind one of the best to ever do it. Another thing Tebow has going for him is the chance to play for head coach Bill Belichick. Tebow is the type of tough, versatile football player that Belichick loves. Also, the media frenzy that has followed Tebow since his days at Florida should be lessened by Belichick, who runs a tight ship in New England. After being released by the Jets earlier this offseason, Tebow’s professional football career appeared to be over. There were rumors that he couldn’t even get an offer from the Canadian Football League. Tebow may never come anywhere near accomplishing in the NFL what he did during his days as a Gator. In fact, with each new team the chances of that become less and less likely. But you have to appreciate when a player that works hard gets another chance to try and prove himself. Especially if that player is a former Gator.
