The Louisville Cardinal defensive backfield will have some new faces getting serious playing time this season.
Last season, Charles Gaines was a wide receiver for the Cardinals, catching 11 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown before an injury cut his season short, while Jermaine Reve spent time at both safety and corner, seeing the field primarily as a nickel back when opposing teams wanted to spread the field.
As the secondary now looks to replace their former leader Adrian Bushell, who graduated this spring, both Gaines and Reve will be called upon to help bolster the Cardinals’ pass defense.
For Gaines, the switch from offense to defense appears to have been smooth for the most part. He arrived as a cornerback his freshman year before flipping over to receiver. The speed and good hands that made him a big-play threat on offense also could play a hand in his success at cornerback.
