Is it time to press the panic button at Auburn? It's been a downward spiral the past couple of months for last year's BCS title winners, with losses to Georgia and Alabama and the suspension of running back Mike Dyer. Now comes word that offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is leaving Gene Chizik's coaching staff to become head football coach of Arkansas State. What's worse? He's taking a pay cut to do so.
"Malzahn, who made $1.3 million a year at Auburn, is expected to earn
around $850,000 a year with his new school, according to people familiar
with the hiring. Malzahn will replace Hugh Freeze, who was named Ole
Miss' head coach last week."
Malzahn is taking a $450,000 pay cut to coach Arkansas State. While the move is a sort of homecoming for Malzahn it's still big chunk of money to give up to coach the second-best college team in Arkansas.
