Found October 19, 2011 on Planned Sick Days:
Once again, a certain QB is being discussed amongst Hawkeye message board land. This time it's not about a fight or an arrest. For what seems like a rumor that will never go away, AJ Derby switching from quarterback to linebacker is back up for discussion.

On HawkeyeNation, nwiahawks is stating that Derby has changed to linebacker in practice.

Derby moving from QB to LB has been a subject of rumor since his arrival at Iowa. In the summer of 2010 Hawkeye Insider's Rob Howe tweeted that the move was coming. It didn't at that time.

Derby had worked hard enough at quarterback to earn the number two spot on the roster. Derby remained number two until his suspension following his arrest for public intox the October 2nd. Coach Ferentz stated just yesterday, during his weekly press conference, that Derby was "back with us full speed. He did a really nice job the last two weeks. In fact, he was one of the guys running around throwing the ball against our defense, sometimes too good a job, so we'll see."

So, following those comments that makes the timing of this "rumor" a little weird. With the injuries at linebacker it could be an emergency situation. Possibly no more than Mossbruker as the third string quarterback at Penn State. But, it's also possible that the staff, and Derby, has seen enough of true freshman Jake Rudock to know he's not far away from being the true number two guy.

A move shouldn't be too difficult for a guy that has been studying defenses for the last two years. Derby is certainly big enough to play the position. He's 6'4" 230 pounds. If he has enough speed remains to be seen. With Indiana and Minnesota on the schedule the next two weeks it may be the perfect time to experiment. Derby has three and a half years at Iowa to make his mark and linebacker may be a perfect fit. Then again, it's all just a rumor.
