Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee announced his retirement yesterday, effective July 1st. As my time as president draws to a close, know that my love for Ohio State will continue to grow. #HowFirmThyFriendship — E. Gordon Gee (@presidentgee) June 4, 2013 Gordon Gee was probably the best Ohio State President in recent memory, a fundraising machine. But he never let his lofty position as one of the nation’s top paid college administrators overshadow his deep caring for the students over which he presided. Those students took to Twitter to express their reciprocal feelings for the bow-tie aficionado. I’m going to miss one of the most down to earth people I’ve ever met. He was truly loved #howfirmthyfriendship #OHIO twitter.com/SarLaVoy/statu… — Sarah LaVoy (@SarLaVoy) June 4, 2013   Gee made sure to take time out and talk to everyone he met. Hope he gets to stay on OSU’s campus in some way. #HowFirmThyFriendship — Alex Szablewski (@alexszablewski) June 4, 2013 Forever a Buckeye! #howfirmthyfriendship  instagram.com/p/aJvEZ9SyaI/ — REECE.❤ (@throwsumdees) June 4, 2013   After hours have passed from me finding out about Gee, I’m still tearing up. #HowFirmThyFriendship — Missy Clough (@missy_clough) June 4, 2013 It’s a sad day for #buckeyes everywhere. Good thing @presidentgee has built the strongest community in the world. #HowFirmThyFriendship — Brittany Cox (@bcox10) June 4, 2013   @presidentgee you are a class act from start to finish. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service. #howfirmthyfriendship. — Nora Rubinoff (@norarubinoff) June 4, 2013 So sad hearing @presidentgee is retiring.. He instilled that buckeye spirit in all of us and made OSU a great place! #HowFirmThyFriendship ❤ — marissa vennekotter (@marissavenne) June 4, 2013   Going to miss seeing this little man running around campus in bow ties #howfirmthyfriendship instagram.com/p/aJqG3HwGr9/ — Emma Dickman (@emma_dickman) June 4, 2013 Ohio State won’t be the same without @presidentgee — kruti pandya (@krutipandya92) June 5, 2013   I feel bad for the future buckeyes because they won’t be able to get this! @presidentgee twitter.com/k_beck15/statu… — Kelly Becker (@k_beck15) June 5, 2013 To protest what happened with @presidentgee we should have thousands of students write to the board of trustees saying we want him back. RT! — Michelle Endsley (@MichelleEndsley) June 5, 2013   We will miss @presidentgee twitter.com/DeltaZetaOSU/s… — Delta Zeta OSU (@DeltaZetaOSU) June 5, 2013 @presidentgee is always going to be the first person to shake my hand after I received my degree. That’s how I choose to remember him. — The People’s Buckeye (@tPeoplesBuckeye) June 5, 2013   if anyone is wondering where I stand on Gee’s retirement from Ohio State president, check my profile photo. @presidentgee is awesome!!! — Ryan Letcher (@ryryletcher) June 5, 2013 @presidentgee, you will always be welcome at the hockey house! twitter.com/Heeter1/status… — Cal Heeter (@Heeter1) June 5, 2013 Then came the Ohio State Football team (current and former) and their gushing of support for Dr. Gee: How can you get rid of the best president in America for that? Brush it off and move on. Gordon gee is the man — MIKE BENNETT (@mike63bennett) June 4, 2013 I don’t care how the press tries to twist it… President Gee was an amazing guy and did a tremendous amount for Ohio State. #DejaVu — Reid Fragel (@Fragel79) June 4, 2013   #RP clinsley09 Im truly salty President Gee is retiring! He is a great leader and will be missed — Tom Herman (@CoachTomHerman) June 4, 2013   Want to thank @presidentgee for taking time to meet with recruits. He played a major role and was a team player. He will be missed. — Mark Pantoni (@markpantoni) June 4, 2013 You can tell from these tweets that President Gee was well loved and well respected amongst the University. From regular students to student athletes to the coaches, almost everyone had a tear to shed or a nice word to say about The Man In The Bowtie. He’ll be gone as the University President in less than a month, but that won’t keep those loyal and faithful to Ohio State from remembering him how he was and how he made them feel as though he was there for them.
