The Illinois Fighting Illini (1-0) and Cincinnati Bearcats (1-0) are both perfect entering the second game of the season at 11 a.m. Saturday, but one of the two teams will leave Champaign’s Memorial Stadium with a No. 1 in the loss column.
The Illini are coming off a 42-34 victory over Southern Illinois in their opener. It took a fourth-down incompletion late in the game for Illinois to seal the win. For Cincy, the Bearcats defeated Purdue 42-7 for their season-opening victory.
This is only the second meeting in history between Illinois and Cincinnati. The only other time the teams played each other, Brian Kelly-coached Cincinnati won 49-36 in 2009.
Coming into the 2013 season, the Bearcats were a popular pick to finish second in the American Conference under new head coach Tommy Tuberville. I am not sure which is most surprising about that sentence, the fact Tuberville is now in Cincy or the American Conference, not the Big East.
