Tweet Things have quickly advanced from good to ugly for Florida State star quarterback and Heisman candidate Jameis Winston. After news broke recently that Winston could be a suspect in a sexual assault case from 2012, ESPN is reporting that DNA analysis taken from underwear belonging to the victim was confirmed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to match that of Winston’s. According to the DNA analysis report, a copy of which was viewed by ESPN.com on Wednesday, the Florida state crime lab determined the chance of the DNA in the woman’s underwear being a match for someone other than Winston was one in 2.2 trillion. Police obtained a sexual assault kit on Dec. 7, 2012, when the accuser reported the alleged incident had occurred at an off-campus apartment. Winston’s DNA was recently obtained through a buccal swab he provided to authorities investigating the case. A DNA match in the victim’s underwear doesn’t incriminate Winston of sexual assault, but it does signify that the redshirt freshman quarterback had some involvement with the woman on December 7, 2012, the date that she claims she was sexually assaulted. Making matters more cloudy is that the victim’s family alleges that she was discouraged from further pursuing the case early in 2013, and was told that doing so would “make her life miserable.” We will refrain from making any assumptions as case regarding sexual assault is a sensitive matter, and should be left to the authorities to sort out. Hopefully a fair and accurate resolution is reached soon.
