Cam Coffman stepped in for the injured Tre Roberson in Saturday's win over Massachusetts and performed quite well. Roberson is done for the season and will be redshirted.

Coffman, a sophomore, was solid in his first outing for the Hoosiers. He completed 16-of-22 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown. IU already had a big lead when he entered the game and he spent much of his time handing the ball off to the runningbacks.

Coffman is a junior college transfer from Arizona Western Community College. In 2011, he passed for 2,244 yards, 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

He led his team to the NJCAA championship game. In that game, he had 291 yards and four touchdowns but Arizona Western fell short of winning a championship.

Wilson stated in his weekly press conference that there will be less designed run plays for Coffman but also that he probably has a better arm than Roberson.

The biggest knock on Coffman going forward is his lack of experience. He has never had a snap against a Big Ten opponent. Roberson was exceptionally mobile in the pocket, which is important behind a young offensive line. It remains to be seen if Coffman will be able to avoid the pass rush of conference opponents.

Coffman's first test will be at home against Ball State. Last season, the Cardinals defeated IU 27-20 in the season opener at Lucas Oil stadium. This will be the most difficult challenge the Hoosiers will face before Big Ten season starts.
