Jake Waters broke Cam Newton's junior college record for completion percentage last season. This year, he'll start his FBS career as Kansas State's starting quarterback. Wildcats coach Bill Snyder named Waters the winner of K-State's quarterback derby, but noted that sophomore Daniel Sams will also play in the Wildcats' season opener on Friday against North Dakota State on FOX Sports 1. Waters transferred to Kansas State before spring practice, but captured the job during fall camp. "He invested himself and he truly worked at it extremely hard and did above and beyond what he was asked for," Snyder said. "He invested a lot of his time and showed a degree of consistency that helped him and helped us." Last season, Waters led Iowa Western to a juco national title and threw for 3,501 yards and 39 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Sams missed a few "practice opportunities" late in fall camp, Snyder said, and said though Sams will play, how much he'll play is up in the air. "I really dont know. I could answer that question the same way about any player in the program. It could be five plays, it could be 50," he said. Sams is the speedier quarterback of the two, but Waters also rushed for 256 yards and six scores for Iowa Western CC last season.
