LOS ANGELES --- USC defensive end Devon Kennard confirmed through his Twitter account a torn pectoral muscle Friday morning. Kennard reportedly tore the muscle during weight training on Thursday. He was not at the players only workouts on Friday but was seen walking around campus in a sling. The expected timetable for a torn pectoral is generally 2-3 months and the injury could keep Kennard out for the entire season but he is hopeful for a speedy recovery and no timetable for his absence has been set according to his teammates. I actually talked to him last night and asked him how it was looking, said USC wide receiver Robert Woods. He said hes still waiting for (MRI results) to come back in. He was like Just pray for me bro. He definitely has strong faith and thats what I like about DK. Hes definitely on the bright side of things. Woods described Kennards spirits as pretty up when they spoke. For the Trojans, the search to find Kennards replacement opposite Wes Horton on the defensive line begins today. Horton was seen working with incoming freshman Leonard Williams on the side during workouts Friday morning. (We were) pretty much just (working on) pass rush in general, Horton said. Hes raw. Hes coming from high school. Every day were out here I try to pick a part, one little aspect, of the defense that he needs to get better at." Williams is a 65 270-pound prototype defensive end out of Mainland High School in Daytona Beach and was an Under Armour All-American. Thats why Coach O (defensive line coach Ed Orgeron) and the whole staff is very excited for him because hes a big presence and kind of reminds them of Armond Armstead a big body. Its just a matter of if he can be dominant early. Thats what were planning on him being. In addition to Williams, redshirt freshman Greg Townsend Jr., redshirt junior Kevin Greene, and junior college transfer Morgan Breslin will have an opportunity to fight for the starting defensive end spot in Kennards absence. Its going to be a huge challenge but I think between the older guys constantly on Greg or Leonard (or) whoever may step in that spot and Coach O to come in to groom these guys, its just going to be a faster turnover, Horton said. Hes just not going to have as much time to be a pup. Hes going to have to grow fast. The Trojans open Fall Camp August 6th.
