In a sense, some of the improvement by Collin Klein as a passer has been related to the situations Kansas State created in its last three games. The Wildcats fell into a 14-0 hole all three times, forcing the run-oriented quarterback to pass the football. His passing numbers, for the most part, have improved, including a 281-yard output against Texas A&M. Klein engineered a 53-50 victory in four overtimes. In addition to the early deficits, however, openings were sensed in the passing game as opponents have stacked the box more to stuff Klein in the run game. He still carried the ball a career-high 35 times against A&M, gaining 103 yards and scoring five touchdowns. "I think putting him in a position to do what he has done, the capacity to have some balance in our offense, where you are not quite as predictable, helps a great deal," Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. "We have had some fine performances from some of our receivers that have made some very, very fine catches as well. It is a collective thing. It is not Collin. It is everybody who is involved with it." Still, it is Klein who pulls the trigger with a delivery that is often criticized. Yet against A&M, a perfect 53-yard strike with 5:49 left in the fourth quarter capped a quick two-play drive. The TD drew the Wildcats within three points and they sent the game into overtime with a 44-yard field goal by Anthony Cantele. Proof now exists that Kansas State does not necessarily need to plod downfield in short chunks in order to score touchdowns. Trailing by double-digits in both halves, the Wildcats proved they have the capability to rally. Snyder, however, desires better starts with Kansas State sitting 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big 12 going into a Nov. 19 clash at Texas. "That is an interesting stat; it truly is when you think about it," Snyder said of the 14-0 deficits created in losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, as well as the A&M win. Each time the Wildcats recovered to gain a lead, though, the first advantage they enjoyed against the Aggies came in overtime. "I would hate to think that a magic formula is to fall behind," Snyder added. "We need to be better. Bottom line (of) the whole thing is, we need to start better than what we have been the last three ballgames.
