(Eds: APNewsNow.) By MURRAY EVANS Associated Press As Oklahoma's defense fell apart late last season, linebacker Corey Nelson often felt like a man without a position.
Starting with a late-season game against West Virginia, the Sooners often left their linebackers on the sideline and played seven defensive backs in an attempt to slow down the up-tempo offenses they were facing.
The no-linebacker strategy failed. Against West Virginia, Oklahoma gave up a school-record 778 yards and defensive coordinator Mike Stoops acknowledged he'd done the linebackers ''an injustice.''
As No. 16 Oklahoma (1-0) prepares to host West Virginia (1-0) on Saturday, Nelson is back in his role as an anchor of the Sooners' defense. He led the Sooners with eight tackles and a sack in a season-opening 34-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
BEST OF MAXIM
NORMAN, Okla. -- Maybe one of the reasons Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma staff were so mum about who would be quarterback at Oklahoma was because the Sooners were doing more than figuring out who the quarterback would be.
According to Dean Blevins of KWTV in Oklahoma City, Stoops brought in former Nevada coach Chris Ault to learn the Pistol offense the offense that Collin Kaepernick...
That's not who he is. Trevor Knight's not a guy who completes a third of his 21 passes for two yards an attempt. That's what he did in the first half of his collegiate debut on Saturday in a 34-0, but it's easy to believe that's not the same quarterback Bob Stoops named his starter before the season. Quarterbacks who do that don't beat out older players like...
One of the best games all season long, not just in the Big 12, came Nov. 17 during week 11 when the Oklahoma Sooners went to Morgantown to face West Virginia for the first time as conference foes.
The Mountaineers were on a four-game losing streak and 2-4 in the Big 12, 5-4 overall. The Sooners were 7-2 and No. 13 in the country.
Landry Jones threw for a school-record 554 yards...
Oklahoma and West Virginia have the honor of playing the first Big 12 game of the season when they meet in Norman on Saturday night. Both are coming off season open victories albeit in decidedly different fashions. The Mountaineers struggled to fend off William and Mary in their first game minus Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, and Stedman Bailey. William & Mary led the game at halftime...
King Barry was already at the top of my Sooner list, but he has ascended to a higher-level with his candid comments about the spoiled punk Johnny Manziel. Switzer had the following to say: “I’m certainly disappointed in his actions,” Switzer said while on ESPN Radio. “For him to act so arrogant, I wanted to jerk his face mask and I wanted to grab him.”
Two other college...
Hey Barry Switzer, get in line. The legendary Oklahoma Sooners coach became the latest in a long line of football royalty to blast Johnny Manziel for his behavior on the field. During a radio interview with ESPN’s Colin Cowherd on Wednesday, Switzer said that he couldn’t believe the Heisman Trophy winner’s behavior during the Rice […]
In April 2011, Lon Kruger left UNLV after seven seasons at the helm of the basketball program -- but if one ticket-sales billboard outside Las Vegas is to be believed, the current Oklahoma Sooners head man is still in Sin City.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal , the advertisement below could be seen Wednesday overlooking Interstate 215:
That guy with the whistle? That...
These aren’t your usual Oklahoma Sooners. They might, in fact, seem to harken back to the days of yore, a run-heavy offense designed to overwhelm foes with physicality, then mix in a dose of skill.
