LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger has left his first game as a starter following a vicious sack. Mettenberger was slammed flat on his back by blitzing North Texas cornerback Hilbert Jackson on a third-down play late in the first quarter. There appeared to be helmet-to-helmet contact before Mettenberger's head snapped backward. Mettenberger was able to walk to the bench on his own and threw passes on the sideline after being examined by trainers, but the LSU staff did not allow Mettenberger to have his helmet back when North Texas punted the ball back to the Tigers. LSU backup QB Stephen Rivers, brother of NFL QB Philip Rivers, entered the game on the next series. Later, Mettenberger trotted to the locker room. He was 3 of 5 for 51 yards.

North Texas braces for LSU QB's anticipated debut

When Zach Mettenberger predicted this would be the longest week of his life, he wasn't even talking about tropical weather from Isaac that would bring life in south Louisiana to a standstill for more than a day. The quarterback for No. 3 LSU is entering his fourth year of college football and finally makes his much anticipated debut as a starter for a major program on Saturday...

LSU QB Mettenberger leaves game after big hit

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger has left his first game as a starter following a vicious sack. Mettenberger was slammed flat on his back by blitzing North Texas cornerback Hilbert Jackson on a third-down play late in the first quarter. There appeared to be helmet-to-helmet contact before Mettenberger's head snapped backward. Mettenberger was able...

No. 3 LSU messes with North Texas

Kenny Hilliard rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 3 LSU opened its season with a 41-14 victory over North Texas on Saturday night. While the heavily favored Tigers were never threatened, their performance did not always thrill a Death Valley crowd that eagerly anticipated the debut of Zach Mettenberger as starting quarterback. Mettenberger, who was briefly sidelined...

LSU RB Ford cleared for North Texas, Jones out

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU coach Les Miles says running back Michael Ford has been cleared to play against North Texas in the No. 3 Tigers' opener on Saturday night, but he is unsure when linebacker Tahj Jones may be able to return. Ford and Jones both had appealed unspecified problems with their academic standing which placed their eligibility in doubt earlier this week. Ford...

Miles sees minor, correctable problems for LSU

Les Miles appreciates that season openers can be sloppy, even for elite teams. So for No. 3 LSU, a 41-14 victory over six-touchdown underdog North Texas was mildly disappointing, but hardly cause for concern. Miles says he's pleased the Tigers had a chance to play a real game on the heels of a disruptive tropical storm. He says getting the game in allows them to make needed...

LSU Football: Michael Ford Cleared to Play Saturday

Not that they really need him against North Texas, but LSU running back Michael Ford’s academic eligibility issues have apparently been cleared up, and he is eligible to play Saturday night. The university never specified exactly what the hangup was with Ford and linebacker Tahj Jones’ grades was, but last season’s leading rusher is ready to go. Jones, however, is apparently...

LSU’s return game doesn’t appear to have lost a step

LSU’s dynamic return man Tyrann Mathieu was dismissed from the team a couple of weeks ago and many thought that LSU special teams may suffer. Sophomore wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has different ideas about that, he’s already returned two punts for touchdowns against the North Texas Mean Green, even though the first return was called back. This bodes well for LSU, who was...

LSU running back Michael Ford cleared to play

LSU running back Michael Ford has been going through an appeals processwith the NCAA because of academic eligibility. Ford’s status for this season has been up in the air, but last night Les Miles said that Ford has been cleared to play this weekend against North Texas. LSU’s Les Miles says that Kenny Hilliard and Alfred Blue will get the bulk of the carries for the Tigers on...

Hilliard leads No. 3 LSU over North Texas

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Zach Mettenberger could afford to miss a few throws in a less-than-dazzling first start. That was apparent from the moment Kenny Hilliard's 6-foot, 231-pound frame burst through the right side of the line and rumbled away from the North Texas defense for a 38-yard score on LSU's opening series. Hilliard rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and...

North Texas falls to No. 3 LSU, 41-14

For North Texas coach Dan McCarney, part of turning a program around is refusing to accept a lopsided loss against a national title contender like LSU. So even after the Mean Green played well enough to cause LSU fans to briefly boo their own offense, McCarney wasn't passing around many compliments after a 41-14 loss to the third-ranked Tigers on Saturday night. ''I...

North Texas Slant Routes

LSU rolled to a relatively easy and mostly uninspiring 41-14 win over North Texas on Saturday night.  Watching the game in Tiger Stadium, I was aggravated for most of the game.   I felt that the team played sloppy and lacked emotion.   However, a look at the stat sheet shows a pretty dominating performance, especially on the ground.    Here are some observations:Even though...
