via www.blog.gamblerspalace.com Washington (Pac-12) (+5) vs. Boise St. (MWC) December 22nd 3:30 pm ESPN – This was a rare “down” year for Chris Petersen and the Boise St. Broncos. It’s pretty amazing when a 10-2 year can be considered a down year. Going into the year, everyone knew that Boise had a chance to once again make BCS noise if they could knock off Michigan St. in the opening week of the season. They came up short in that game, losing 17-13, and it seemed clear that the offense was going to have some growing pains in the post-Kellen Moore era; they were held to below 14 points in two of their first three games. It wasn’t until a week 6 matchup with Southern Miss when they broke the 40-point barrier in a game. They went on to reach 40 points in 5 of their games on the year, as Joe Southwick grew into his role as the leader of the offense. A shocking November 3rd loss to San Diego St. on the Blue Turf left their chances for a conference championship in doubt for the second year in a row. They were able to finish the season with three straight wins and a share of the MWC crown. The Huskies had one of the toughest schedules on paper to start the year. They had a game at LSU in the second week of the season and a brutal three-game stretch beginning on September 27th playing Stanford, at Oregon, and USC at home. In the end, a 7-5 record has to be considered a success against that brutal schedule. It was the way in which they got there that was the surprise. They lost in Baton Rouge which was expected, but then they were able to beat both Stanford and Southern Cal, wrapped around a loss at Eugene to Oregon. Suddenly 4-2 with a very workable schedule in front of them, they only managed to finish with wins against Cal, Utah, and Colorado which may be the worst bottom three of any conference in the nation. Amazingly, they aren’t even the bottom three in the Pac-12 because you can’t round up the worst three teams in the conference without involving Washington St. – which the Huskies managed to lose to in the final week of the season. In the end, it is the third straight 7-win season for HC Steve Sarkisian, in his fourth season. What to Expect: The name Boise should be enough to get Sarkisian’s ‘Huskies up for this one. They are going to have to find a way to get up for a game outside of Seattle and rise above their tendency to play down to their competition. This year’s edition of the Broncos is solid but not great. This should be a competitive game, but I will take Washington to cover and call for them to win this game outright, 30-26. -Doak
