The Oregon Ducks are known for having a high powered, extremely high tempo and an even more explosive and speedy offense.

Chip Kelly announced on Friday morning that Marcus Mariota will be the one to lead this offense to the promised land.

This selection comes as quite a shock to some in the Ducks camp, as sophomore Bryan Bennett was expected to take the reigns in Eugene this year. However, after stellar practices, and an incredible spring game as far as stats go, redshirt freshmen Mariota seems to be the right man for the job.

Mariota will start in the Ducks' first game at home to Arkansas State on September 1st. A freshmen has not started at Oregon in a season opener since 1991, when Danny O'Neril was the signal caller. Certainly having the home crowd behind him for his first collegiate appearance will help.

Although the coaching staff don't seem to think that Mariota needs much help to get this team going. He possesses great size at 6'4 and a solid 20lbs. He definitely has the speed that has come to be associated with all of the dangerous weapons at Oregon, he has been clocked at running a 4.4 40 yard dash, and anyone that has seen the highlights from the spring game this year, know this is no mistake on the speedometer.

With the first 3 games being played against non conference foes, who on paper look like 3 easy W's, Mariota should get acclimated to this new role, pretty smoothly.

The gunslinger out of Hawaii, has been dubbed the next Dennis Dixon, only better. He has much better awareness of the game and a better arm. Being so young, he has plenty of room for improvement.

Mariota is certainly one to watch in the Pac-12. With all of the buzz surrounding the chosen one at USC, Mariota will be a close second. The Oregon Ducks aren't ranked number 5 in the preseason rankings for nothing.
