Marcus Mariota threw for a career-high 456 yards and four touchdowns and No. 2 Oregon handed Tennessee its first loss of the season, 59-14 on Saturday. Freshman Johnny Mundt, who replaced ailing tight end Colt Lyerla, had five catches for 121 yards and two TDs for the Ducks (3-0). Josh Huff added six catches for 125 yards and a score. Mariota, who completed 23 of 33 passes, was the first Oregon quarterback to throw for more than 400 yards in a game since Kellen Clemens in 2005. The sophomore quarterback's yardage ties for the third-most in a game in school history. Oregon's sloppy play at the start - four penalties for 35 yards in the first quarter - helped Tennessee (2-1) take an early lead, but it was fleeting and the Ducks led 38-7 at halftime. Justin Worley completed 13 of 25 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown for the Volunteers, who opened the season with easy home wins over Austin Peay and Western Kentucky. But Tennessee could not keep up with the speedy Ducks, w...

The Tailgater college football week 3 picks

The Tailgater college football week 3 picks We witnessed some spectacular upsets last week, and it made for some interesting results against the spread. There were some hits and some misses for the Tailgater crew; only one of us finished with a winning record.  Few things are more humbling than going against Vegas. The second week results pulled the standings closer; here’s how...

Strike A Pose! The Oregonian’s John Canzano warns Marcus Mariota that Heisman talks are coming, and coming quickly. Oregon 59, Tennessee 14: Ducks use 59-0 Run To Annihilate Volunteers

Sometimes in life, it is not about how you start, but rather how you finish. Marcus Mariota and Oregon proved that this afternoon. Mariota and the Ducks overcame a bit of a slow start in their game and wound up vivisecting the Tennessee Volunteers 59-14 today at Autzen Stadium. Mariota started off two for his first seven passing, and the Ducks as a team had four penalties...

Week Three All-Video Game Numbers Team

After each week during the college football season I usually put together an “All-Video Game Numbers Team”. It’s a fantasy formatted team (QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, K, DST) compiled of FBS players that just put up ridiculous stats that week, whether they’re playing Alabama or Eastern Alabama A&M. Here’s the best of Week Three. QB Johnny Manziel (Sophomore, Texas...

Mundt shines during first start

(Eugene, Ore.) On paper, Marcus Mariota was the star of Oregon's dominant 59-14 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

The Mariota Way

Sports talk radio won't bring the best out in everyone. Either on the phone or in studio, the margin of error is thin. Say too much and you're a grandstanding attention hog giving opponents material for their bulletin board. No one wants a fired up defensive tackle whispering sweet nothings in their ear at the bottom of a pile. "We heard you were gonna...

Five factors: three players and two units that must come to play for the Oregon Ducks versus ...

From coaches' comments during the week, here are three keys to the game versus Virginia: Super Mario must be super Scott Frost said this week that Marcus Mariota has been making good decisions on his throws this season, but the Ducks' passing game has been plagued by drops, breakdowns in protection and play calls that didn't work.  On Wednesday he told Rob Moseley...

Results of The Coveted Tee Shirt Contest, Oregon 59, Tennessee 14

After stumbling and looking out of synch in the game's first 9 minutes, the Ducks scored 59 unanswered points and 8 touchdowns in 8 possessions in a 59-14 win over Tennessee. Marcus Mariota led the electric offensive effort with 456 yards passing, while the defense used stifling pursuit to limit big plays, holding the Vols to a single touchdown in the first quarter until a late...

Oregon Wants Alabama, As Well They Should

It ended up being a big tease. At the beginning of Oregon's game with Tennessee at Autzen Stadium on Saturday, it appeared that Marcus Mariota was slightly off his game, misfiring on short throws, and failing to establish any rhythm.  Six minutes into the game, all the telltale signs for a major college football upset were present. Tennessee was up 7-0, dominating with...

Oregon 59-14, postgame

The Ducks stuck to the plan. You have to like the poise they showed in overcoming a shaky start, getting Marcus Mariota in a great rhythm despite early struggles in the passing game. It was the first time they trailed all year after getting off to lightning fast starts in their first two games, and the feeling is that this team takes its cues from their even-keel coach and chill...

eDuck Podcast episode 19

Erik and Robby discuss Oregon's 59-14 win over the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. Post game comments from Ducks QB Marcus Mariota, DL DeForest Buckner and TE Johnny Mundt can be heard.

TE Mundt makes a splash for No. 2 Oregon

Freshman tight end Johnny Mundt had already impressed his Oregon coaches and teammates with his work ethic. Against Tennessee, he impressed everyone else, too. Mundt subbed for absent tight end Colt Lyerla against the Volunteers on Saturday and had five catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks defeated Tennessee 59-14 to remain No. 2 in the Associated Press poll. Mundt...

Oregon Has Endless Possibilities On Offense

The Oregon Ducks are dangerous. The lopsided scores so far this season should be enough indication of that. But if I’m a defensive coordinator that has Oregon on the upcoming schedule, what I saw this weekend has me fretting even more. In addition to its speed, Oregon has more versatility than ever before. Quarterback Marcus Mariota has multiple speedy receivers to throw...

What Did We Learn in Week 3?

If not Texas A&M, could Marcus Mariota and Oregon be best-suited to challenge Alabama? Photo: USA Today Sports  1. Alabama and Oregon have to play each other While you were busy watching the most entertaining three hours college football has had to offer so far this season, Oregon was busy doing unspeakable things to Tennessee. The Volunteers are very obviously in a rebuilding...

Tennessee at Oregon: The Good, Bad & Ugly

The SEC came calling to Autzen Stadium as the University of Tennessee Volunteers came calling to visit the number two ranked college football team in the nation, the University of Oregon Ducks.  Under new coach Mark Helfrich, Oregon hasn’t lost a beat from their break neck offensive attack, as they are actually executing plays faster under Helfrich than previous coach Chip Kelly...
