What a difference a year's experience can make. Michael Heitz started every game for the Fighting Illini football team at right tackle last fall. The redshirt freshman struggled with a lack of experience at times, but he learned on the job. Now he's considered one of the better linemen on the team.

The city of Springfield used to provide the University of Illinois with a number of athletes, but the supply has dwindled markedly in recent years. Someone who is getting a look from the Fighting Illini football coaching staff this year is offensive lineman James Torgerson, who did well in a recent UI summer camp.
The Fighting Illini football coaching staff defines their Leo position in broad enough terms to accommodate numerous body types. The hybrid defensive end/linebacker attracts tall, lanky ends with speed as well as linebacker types who can both cover and rush the quarterback. Donnie White looks more like a linebacker but plays like an end.
The Fighting Illini football coaching staff is searching high and low for outstanding receivers to play in its new spread offense. While he's only an upcoming junior, Malik Turner shows excellent promise. The Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin athlete earned plenty of attention at a UI summer camp in East Peoria recently.
