Former Michigan State University quarterback Kirk Cousins made the list of 24 Big Ten student-athletes who were awarded the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for 2011-2012. The award goes to student-athletes who display positive sportsmanship throughout the school year, and they must be in good academic standing the whole year. Also, each student-athlete must demonstrate good citizenship outside of their sport. Jenilee Rathje, Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award recipient, in action for MSU volleyball. Cousins was selected out of a list of 300 Big Ten student-athletes who were all honorees for the award. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus in the Big Ten was selected by his/her university as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university’s list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were chosen. Spartan volleyball player Jenilee Rathje was the female from Michigan State awarded with the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. A few other Spartans that were honorees include: Austin Thornton (basketball), Lykendra Johnson (basketball), Rebecca Buchholtz (track and field), Tony Bucciferro (baseball), and Lori Padilla (softball). Say what you want about Cousins game on the field, but there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he is the PERFECT student-athlete. He is the type of man that you would hope your child grows up to be like. From the field, to the classroom, to the community, there have not been many people more involved than Cousins during his time in East Lansing.
