For some unknown reason (other than money), the University of Missouri decided to inflict pain upon their football program by joining the Southeastern Conference on July 1.  Most would think that the Tigers, who went 8-5 last season in a decent Big XII, would take their lumps in their first season in the SEC.  They will travel to #6 Georgia for a nationally-televised night game on Saturday and will also head on the road for games at #9 South Carolina and #23 Florida.  They will play host to defending national champion #2-ranked Alabama on October 13.

The Tigers aren’t joining the SEC shyly.  In fact, they’re coming in growling with trash talk.  Junior defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was asked if he watched Georgia’s opening week 45-23 win over Buffalo to prepare for Saturday’s matchup.  His response:

“I watched the game. I turned it off, too.  It’s like watching Big Ten football. It’s old-man football.  If we execute, nobody in this league [the SEC] can touch us. Period.”

I’ve watched quite a bit of football in my time, but I’m not quite sure I have ever seen “old-man football.”  Maybe he was referring to the way Georgia sat in their armchair sucking on Werther’s Originals while complaining about the weather, the game and all the racket their wife was making.

Missouri wanted to join the Big Ten before Nebraska was selected as the conference’s 12th team before last season.  So while Richardson and his teammates won’t be offered any Werther’s up north, they will enjoy not being touched by any SEC team this season.  And yes, that’s the same SEC that has won the last six Division I FBS national championships.
