ST. LOUIS -- Mizzou's Gary Pinkel has been named a finalist for the prestigious Maxwell Football Club's Coach of the Year Award after helping guide the Tigers to an 11-1 overall record and Southeastern Conference Eastern Division title in the school's second season in the league. Pinkel, finishing up his 13th season with Mizzou, has won a conference division title in four of the last seven seasons and recently matched legendary Tigers head coach Don Faurot with an all-time program-best 101 wins. This year's squad became just the third team in program history to win 11 games or more in a season. Mizzou currently sits at No. 5 in the Bowl Championship standings heading into Saturday's SEC Championship Game vs. BCS No. 3 Auburn in Atlanta. Duke's David Cutcliffe and Auburn's Gus Malzahn join Pinkel as finalists for the award with the winner set to be announced on December 19.

Pinkel quickly focuses Tigers on the challenge at hand

Like he has so many times in his coaching career, Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel thought first of what his mentor, the late Don James, would do upon winning the SEC East title Saturday night. And that would be to get his players to refocus as quickly as possible for the next challenge, the SEC championship game against No. 3 Auburn on Saturday in Atlanta. Which is what Pinkel did Saturday...

Keeler: Mizzou's Pinkel may love the Washington Huskies, but it's time to let them go

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The field is Faurot's. But the giant monolith rising up all around it, stretching toward the sky, is Pinkel's. As is the state-of-the-art athletics training complex, the one just across the bridge, the one with the giant digital tiger in the lobby that snarls and swipes at you as you walk past it, the one with a weight room the size of a strip mall tucked...

Pinkel, No. 5 Tigers thrive in SEC Year 2

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By R.B. FALLSTROM AP Sports Writer A year ago, Gary Pinkel was in no mood for holiday cheer. Missouri had gone a dispiriting 5-7 in its SEC debut season, the program's first losing record since 2005. There has been no sophomore slump for the fifth-ranked Tigers, who surprised nearly everyone by advancing to the SEC championship...

Mizzou needs to take care of business on the field and let the BCS take care of itself

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- From here on out, kiddies, the Z-O-U is partying with house money. Gary Pinkel wouldn't dare say this, and Missouri's Tigers won't dare think this, but Saturday is a no-lose kind of deal. Scenario A: Mizzou loses the SEC Championship game. Congratulations! Worst-case, the consolation prize is a swanky New Year's Day bowl, most likely the Capital...

SEC Championship Game: The Coaches

Now it's time to take a look at the coaches. Auburn is a great example of how coaching matters. In 2012, they didn't win a single conference game. In 2013, Gus Malzahn has them playing for the SEC Championship...
