The University of Alabama doesn't play around when it comes to its trademark.

No, not even when a local bakery, who are huge supporters of the Crimson Tide, decides to create elephant-shaped cookies with a script "A" on them. Seriously? Yeah, seriously.

From The Big Lead:

Mary’s Cake and Pastries received a cease and desist letter, and a request for documentation of how many $1.75 cookies had been sold so Alabama and CLC could collect damages.

Wait, what?

The modest bakery wasn't the only party Alabama and the Collegiate Licensing Company went after, though. They also spent more than $1.4 million on a failed lawsuit against artist Daniel Moore for depicting the Alabama uniform in artwork. Oh, and the school is also trying to assert control over the houndstooth patter, because legendary coach Bear Bryant used to wear it.
The school has since apologized after the news became public. But it's probably too little and too late at this point because the damage has already been done.

  • Typical big college tactics. Just earlier this year, my old high school, the Cedar Hill Longhorns, had to re-configure their logo because the University of TeaSippers (Texas) sent them a cease and dissist or be hit with an infringement lawsuit.
I may be a Texan but I can't stand that school and that act just cemented my feelings even more....Geaux Tigers!!!

  • Thank You Jon Solomon, writer for AL.com for putting this very insidious matter into the light for all to see. Unlike the Daniel Moore fight, the attacks on the LETTERMEN of the IRON BOWL and LETTERMEN of the SEC have included extortion, cyber-bullying, slander, personal attacks and character assassination. Stay tuned.

Saban not pleased with being asked about A.J. McCarron's SI cover

Do you take Nick Saban for the type of person who reads magazines? If you do, don’t ever tell him, because he apparently doesn’t have the time of day for reading a few articles, and he gets offended if you think he does. Tonight a reporter asked Saban what he thought of AJ McCarron’s new cover on this week’s Sports Illustrated, and Nick was not pleased. His response was...

Alabama football: 2 Things to take away from Miss. State game

The Alabama football team certainly had its struggles on Saturday night against Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. But this game could actually benefit the Tide in many ways before they face the 6th ranked Auburn Tigers on November 30th for the annual Iron Bowl. Although the Tide played a sloppy game of football, this game, in a way, humbled the Tide– something that...

2013 Heisman Watch: Week 12

The 2013 Heisman Watch is closer now than it has been all season. Week 12 shook up the top 5, and here’s how the candidates stand in my updated list: 5. Sean Mannion, Oregon State: Yes, Oregon State did take a really hard L this weekend to Arizona State. And yes, the Beavers have fallen off the face of the earth in the second half of the season. However, the junior quarterbacks...

Dealership offers free cars if Auburn shuts out Alabama

Lynch Toyota of Auburn is offering free cars if the Auburn Tigers shut out the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl on November 30.

McCarron's mom has got it going on

AJ McCarron is on the verge of leading Alabama to its third consecutive national title. His run has also raised the prominence of his girlfriend, Katherine Webb, and to a different extent, his mom, Dee Dee Bonner. We caught up with the woman who gave a different meaning to red -- not Crimson -- in gaining a gathering on social media. Dee Dee's doing pretty well on Twitter, too...

Nick Saban Rips in to Reporter that Asked Him About A.J. McCarron's SI Cover

Nick Saban is a no nonsense, football oriented kind of guy (in case you didn't know). He is not in to the all the extraneous crap that fills up space for newspapers and web sites. As long as he has been coaching football you would think reporters that regularly cover him and the Alabama football team would know this. Well, apparently one has still not figured this out--and...

Sports Illustrated Covers Not Chosen Over AJ McCarron's Cover

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron graces the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, as the debate rages on where he ranks among college football quarterbacks of today and historically.  It's an interesting choice of covers because so much happened in college football last weekend, and this cover choice would have been better suited for Iron Bowl week, where it would upset Nick...

SI Cover Wonders If AJ McCarron Is The Best Ever (Photo)

When you are 35-2 as a starter in college, it would appear fair for people to bring your name up in the discussion of all-time greats. That’s exactly what Sports Illustrated is doing with it’s latest cover featuring Alabama QB AJ McCarron. “King Crimson” is what they call the Bama star who is currently trying to lead his team to three straight national championships: McCarron...

Photo: AJ McCarron Gets Newest Sports Illustrated Cover Honors For ‘King Crimson’ Feature

Alabama is 10-0 right now and well on its way to a third straight BCS National Championship. It has been another ridiculously dominant season for the Crimson Tide, and a major reason for that success is signal-caller AJ McCarron. McCarron has never received the hype or accolades that many other quarterbacks across the nation often do, but what he certainly doesn’t lack is a football...

Saban Says Close Game Could Benefit

It is something of a measure of where Nick Saban has the Alabama football team that the Crimson Tide can go on the road in the Southeastern Conference and win a game by two touchdowns and have most of the focus on what went wrong.

AJ McCarron featured on Sports Illustrated cover as ‘King Crimson’

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is featured on this week's cover of Sports Illustrated. Is it time to start thinking about him as one of the best ever?

Chattanooga-Alabama Preview

Alabama was able to sleepwalk through a victory at Mississippi State last weekend without dire consequences. Opponents in the near future probably won't be as forgiving. The two-week hype begins for one of the most anticipated Iron Bowls in years, but No. 1 Alabama has one more game in the interim - against FCS-level Chattanooga on Saturday - and it will give the Crimson Tide...

Joe Torre: I 'feel terrible' for forgetting to thank Steinbrenner

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre admitted he screwed up during his 28-minute Hall of Fame induction speech, because he failed to thank former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. “I missed thanking the most obvious guy in the world when you’re talking about the Yankees,” a visibly shaken Torre told the New York Daily News. “I mentioned George, but my plan was to thank...

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette flubs headline about Penn State hiring

We’re not sure how this got through without anyone at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wondering if this headline could be received poorly, but the paper probably wants this one back right about now. No name. Just woman. pic.twitter.com/NdAQWvFAUi — Virginia Montanez (@JanePitt) July 27, 2014 @JanePitt Maybe the future bylines for PG writers should be WOMAN (with name then underneath...

Giants CB learns unusual skill to help with interceptions

PHOTO COURTESY: IM MCISAAC/NEWSDAY Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara learned to juggle this off season.  He didn’t do this so he could entertain house guests; he learned in an effort to perfect his skills on defense. Part of Amukamara’s offseason workout was to juggle which he thinks will boost his interception numbers.  The fourth year cornerback says his new skill helps...

Lakers hire Byron Scott as coach

In a less-than-surprising move, the Los Angeles Lakers have hired Byron Scott to be their new head coach. As the only remaining NBA team without a coach, the Lakers were facing scrutiny to get something done. With Scott now on board, they can move on to their offseason program and start to implement his philosophy on the court.  Lakers have agreed to terms with Byron Scott to be...

CJ Spiller likely to be popular trade target?

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports mentions in his Bills training camp report that he expects Buffalo to field calls for one of their running backs as injuries start piling up. According to La Canfora, “Buffalo has more backs than it needs” and specifically mentions that RB C.J. Spiller “could be the odd man out.” La Canfora points to the fact that Spiller is entering the...

Marcus Mariota's course load will make you laugh

Marcus Mariota could have left Oregon for the NFL following last season. The Ducks redshirt junior quarterback would have likely been a first-round draft pick. He could be making millions of dollars as a professional athlete.  The dual threat opted to return to Eugene for at least one more season. Life won’t be too bad for the Heisman contender, either. He’s only taking two...
