EAST LANSING, Mich. — For a university that is primarily known for its postseason success in basketball when it comes to athletics, the Michigan State football program has began to make a name for itself since Mark Dantonio became the head coach seven years ago. With a 14-0 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers (1-6, 0-3) today, the Michigan State Spartans (6-1, 3-0) have become bowl eligible for a school-record seventh consecutive season. Due to recent regular-season and postseason success, high expectations have consumed Dantonio and the MSU football program, and a guaranteed bowl game is something that is still exciting and important each year even thought it’s become the norm. “We’ve built that foundation, but it’s still a big deal,” Dantonio said. MSU Football: Spartans set to take on Purdue

After the program was seemingly in peril a few short weeks ago, the Michigan State football team (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten), has rebounded with two nice wins and will hope to continue their winning ways at home this Saturday against the Purdue Boilermakers (1-5, 0-2 Big Ten). Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and will be televised on Big Ten Network. The game will serve as a chance for...

Michigan State football has the best chance of winning the Legends Division

(Associated Press) This season has been a rollercoaster of emotions for Spartan fans, and it’s only week eight of the college football season. Coming into the season with a new-look offense and a returning high-caliber defense, there were high expectations. After the offense proved to be anemic, expectations went to “can the Spartans go 6-6 this year?”. The Spartans had just...

Despite Saturday struggles, MSU Football needs to stick with Cook

Despite Michigan State sophomore quarterback Connor Cook’s stinking up of the joint Saturday afternoon, Michigan State still managed to come away victorious at home over Purdue, 14-0. However, no matter how bad it may have appeared at times at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, the MSU football program still needs to stand behind Cook. Look, I’m not saying there is any way you can...

MSU Football: Elusiveness key in Jeremy Langford’s improvement

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Coming into the 2013-2014 season, it was uncertain how Michigan State’s rushing attack would recover from the departure of do-it-all running back Le’Veon Bell to the NFL. Last year, Bell rushed 382 times — leading the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) – for 1,793 rushing yards during his final year as a Spartan — which was the second-highest single...

Spartans win again with little fanfare

Last year, Michigan State needed to win its final game of the regular season to become bowl eligible. No need for that kind of drama in 2013. The Spartans have already picked up win No. 6 - and they can expect to be firmly in the Big Ten title hunt when November rolls around. Michigan State eased past Purdue 14-0 on Saturday to remain one of three teams unbeaten in Big Ten play...

Spartans survive rough outing by Cook

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The only place where youd see more overthrows than at Spartan Stadium would be in Central and South America, where they do that to governments rather than receivers. Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook overthrew receivers at an alarming rate for the first three quarters Saturday. He threw over or beyond at least five open receivers, and underthrew three...

Spartans' defense stifles Boilermakers

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Denicos Allen returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown, and Michigan State's offense finally added an insurance score in the fourth quarter of a 14-0 win over Purdue on Saturday. The Spartans didn't make it past the Purdue 32-yard line until the fourth, when receiver Tony Lippett threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Gleichert on a trick play...

Stock Market: Purdue edition

Jeremy Langford made another strong statement as a player for the Spartans in Big Ten play. A couple other players and position groups were especially impressive Saturday as MSU beat Purdue 14-0.
