Remember Nevin Shapiro? Refresh your memory. This was the guy, the former University of Miami Hurricanes booster, that dimed out the entire football and basketball programs after going to jail for running a ponzi scheme. Shapiro, scum of the earth, doesn’t seem to be done, and even evoked Jack Byrnes in the process:

“The public is going to hate me worse in the next coming months,” Shapiro, serving a 20-year sentence for a Ponzi scheme, wrote in numerous e-mails over the past few months. “It’s going to be severe and catastrophic. My feelings are getting inflamed and I’m going to pop off pretty soon with regards to them and the NCAA. I’m coming for them both [UM and former players] and I’m going to be successful.

“I’m taking that program down to Chinatown and the former players and links to that program. Why? Because the U.S. government lined up 47 former players to testify against me in open court if I went to trial. That in itself is motivation to shove it up their collective [butts].”

What additional information did he not tell Charles Robinson? Why hold it until now? Seems like a desperate act for someone who didn’t do much more than create a weeks worth of buzz prior to the start of the 2011 season.

Not much has been said about the NCAA investigation the last few months. Miami suspended current players, such as QB Jacory Harris, to begin the season, and even put itself on a postseason ban for the 2011 year. It is unknown what punishment that the NCAA will hand down, but Miami does expect something on top of their own self-imposed sanctions. Coach Al Golden expects it to not be severe.

“We think the worst is behind us. The [current] coaches and 95 percent of the players weren’t here when that thing went on. There’s a shift by the NCAA to go after the perpetrators and that’s not us.”

I’m not sure I aware of such a shift, but the NCAA has reportedly not spoken with many of the former players that are among the 114 indicated by Shapiro. Probably knowing that many of them wouldn’t cooperate. After all, it’s all about the U.
