Well, geez, Nick Saban. We just wanted to know if you would come to the bake sale.
The Alabama coach appeared to be a little irritated this weekend by the voluminous rumors of his return to the NFL. He shot down speculation again as he prepared to lead the Crimson Tide in college football’s national title game Monday, saying that not only is he not interested in coaching in the NFL again, but even the suggestion may be pushing it too much.
As George Schroeder of USA Today writes:
Saban had a rocky stint in his only head coaching appearance in the NFL, when he led the Miami Dolphins in 2005-2006. While some say that he was handcuffed by his inability to make the personnel moves he wanted, others pointed to his 15-17 record and the trail of criticism left behind him as evidence that the control-heavy coach will only thrive in the college game.
Either way, we’re not going to find out this season. Saban has taken his ball and gone to the BCS title game.

There were some dark days at Notre Dame and Alabama, dark years really, during which two college football's proudest programs flailed and foundered.
As the 21st century dawned, the Fighting Irish and the Crimson Tide were old news, stodgy remnants of a glorious past, not moving fast enough to keep up with the times, and searching for someone to lead them back to the top.

It’s not like Nick Saban needs any advice on how to win a BCS Championship, but watching Florida in the Sugar Bowl is a good place to see what not to do.

It’s hard to believe the Crimson Tide would have a letdown, but you would be hard-pressed to find anyone...
It is no longer news that Nick Saban is an SOB.
People have known it for years, even before the Miami Dolphins sent around a memo warning employees not to make smalltalk with him. It is part of his charm. From the outside, we never even see the man smile.
"Neither do we,'' Alabama running back Eddie Lacy said Thursday. "He smiles randomly. I'm not going to...
There's a school of thought that once the whistle blows and the first kick is in the air head coaches don't matter much, but come Monday in the BCS National Championship is that really the case? We say no, both coaches have a major roll in their respective teams, so perhaps the better question is which coach will actually have the bigger effect on the outcome of the game...

Steve Spurrier is still doing his best to nudge Nick Saban back to the NFL. The South Carolina coach recognizes that his chances of winning the SEC championship are slim as long as Saban is coaching at Alabama. Mariano Rivera may pick up a save tonight without even jogging out from the bullpen if Alabama captures the BCS National Championship with a victory over Notre Dame.
It wouldn't go down in the record books as career save No. 609, but could play a small part in the history of Alabama football, nonetheless.
